CSUB Sets New Program Record In 51-37 Win

Roadrunners hold Lopes to fewest points allowed in a game.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In the first of a three-game home series to close the regular season, CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team earned a fourteen-point victory on the Kern Schools Court in the Icardo Center. One of the top defensive teams in the country, CSUB broke a program record and held the Lopes to its fewest points allowed in a game and cruised to a 51-37 win over Grand Canyon University.

Surprisingly enough, with just nine points on the scoreboard through the first period Bakersfield had a three-point lead at the buzzer. Behind Malayasia McHenry's nine and seven first half points and rebounds the Roadrunners began to pull away from GCU and led by nine at halftime.

An eight-point third quarter advantage despite the visitors shooting 66.7% from the field seemed to put the game away for the home team. Although the Lopes outscored the `Runners by three in the fourth, a tenacious defense held them to 30.2% shooting on the afternoon.

Two players ended in double figures. Ashley Austin finished as CSUB's leading scorer for the fourth time this season with 14 points. McHenry almost tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and nine rebounds.
