Barclay Tosses Complete Game Shutout

HONOLULU, Hawaii – CSU Bakersfield junior pitcher Edgar Barclay put on one of the best pitching performances in school history on Sunday.  The Hawaiian native returned home, struck out 10 and tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout to beat Hawaii 2-0 and give the Roadrunners their third straight series victory.

"Edgar pounded the zone with authority all day," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "Our defense made plays for him and he forced collisions with his best stuff.  Our kids competed all weekend long.  They overcame distractions and turned the negative into a positive.  For the most part, we kept momentum on our side by making key plays both offensively and defensively."

Barclay (3-1) retired the first 17 batters he faced on Sunday.  He lost his perfect game bid in the sixth inning when he hit back-to-back Rainbow Warriors on two straight pitches, but maintained his no-hitter into the seventh.

Alex Baeza led off the seventh inning with the only base hit of the day for the home team.  With the game still tied at 0-0, the Rainbow Warriors opted for some small ball.  The next batter, Ethan Lopez attempted a sacrifice bunt, but the junior pitcher pounced off the mound and threw to second to nail Baeza.  Lopez moved to second on a wild pitch and Barclay walked the next batter to put two on with one out.  He got the next batter to fly out to left and slammed the door with Lopez at third with a strikeout to end the inning.

CSUB (12-10) used the momentum in the next half inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Will Picketts was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Tyler Jorgensen laid down a bunt behind him, but the Hawaii pitcher Dylan Thomas (2-2) threw it away and the `Runners had two baserunners in scoring position with nobody out.  With Barclay cruising on the mound, Daniel Carrizosa executed a pinch-hit safety squeeze to score Picketts and Barba singled to put CSUB on top.  With the single, Barba extended his hitting streak to 13 games and he has reached base safely in 15 straight.

Barclay's complete game was the second of the season for CSUB.  Saturday's starter Ethan Skuija also tossed a complete game on March 2 against Santa Clara.  It was the first complete game shutout since Max Carter blanked Northern Colorado on May 5, 2017.  The junior's one-hitter matches James Barragan's effort against Sacramento State on April 18, 2015.

Barclay has struck out at least 10 batters in back-to-back starts after he sat down 11 against Fairleigh Dickinson last Sunday.  For the year, he lowered his ERA to 1.78 and his WHIP to .80.  Opposing hitters are batting just .167 off of him in 30.1 innings pitched.

Sunday's victory capped a 3-1 series victory by the Roadrunners who have won 10 of their last 12 games heading into Western Athletic Conference action.  The `Runners took three of four from Santa Clara and swept Fairleigh Dickinson last weekend before defeating the Rainbow Warriors.  CSUB will open up WAC play next Friday at 5:00 p.m. PST against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
