CSUB Drops Last Regular Season Road Game At CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team could not overcome a second quarter double-digit deficit as California Baptist picked up their sixth consecutive victory with a 67-43 win over the Roadrunners at home.

"Even though the score doesn't show it, I thought we played CBU better here than we did at home," said head coach Greg McCall. "They're a very good team - efficient in what they run and capable of adjusting within the offense on the fly. We took away their three-point shooting tonight but had too many defensive breakdowns in the paint allowing their post play to do whatever they wanted."

Bakersfield dug themselves into a nine-point deficit in the first period but closed the period with their own offensive run to tie the score at seventeen a piece. The Lancers would respond in the second and build an eighteen-point deficit behind Britney Thomas' fourteen first half points. Senior guard Alexxus Gilbert had a team-high seven points.

CBU struggled to score the basketball in the backcourt when the Roadrunners identified matchups quickly in transition and made the offense face their half court defense. The squad created ten steals and forced twenty-three turnovers on the night but couldn't get hot from the perimeter. CSUB shot 12.5% in the second and 14.3% in the fourth for a combined thirteen points.

"If nothing else, we learned what it means to play a game within the game," explained McCall. "You have to be able to make adjustments at any moment and we weren't able to do that tonight. Although we did a good job on their perimeter players, they made the adjustment to feed the post and we didn't counter that adjustment with good enough defensive pressure in the lower block."

Gilbert was the only player to finish in double figures for the `Runners with a team-best ten points.
