Roadrunners Split Weekend with Comeback Sunday Win

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Trailing 6-5 in the top of the ninth inning, Alexander Gonzales stroked a two-run single to right center field to score Buck Anderson and Sergio Robles as the CSU Bakersfield baseball team beat Ball State 7-6.  The Roadrunners will leave Arizona with a 2-2 record on opening weekend with victories over the Cardinals and the Bears of Cal.

Damian Henderson led off the final inning with a base hit up the middle.  Sergio Robles followed with a walk and Henderson was lifted for Anderson when he reached second.  Jake Ortega laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Gonzales' heroics.

It was an uneventful bottom of the inning as Edgar Barclay (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first career victory.  The junior also earned a save in the victory against Cal.

The Roadrunners seemed to be in control as the game got late.  In the eighth inning, with one out, a runner on first and a 2-0 count on the hitter, Barclay relieved Kevin Altarmirano.  Barclay walked his first batter, but struck out the next for the second out of the inning.  An error by the CSUB defense allowed Ball State to score from second and tie the score at 5-5.  In the next at-bat, a Barclay wild pitch allowed the Cardinals to take a 6-5 lead.

It was a seesaw battle on Sunday as the lead changed hands on six occasions.  Ball State jumped on CSUB starter Graham Kuck for a run in the first without recording a hit, but the CSUB offense came alive in the second.  Will Picketts and Jake Ortega had RBI singles in the inning and Noah Barba had a RBI groundout in the second frame.
Ball State tied the score in the bottom of the second to chase Kuck and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth against Ethan Skuija

In the following inning, CSUB tied the game in on a double by Daniel Carrizosa and took the lead later in the inning when Picketts drove him in on a base hit through the left side.

Skuija had a bounce back performance after a rough start against Pepperdine in the season opener.  The junior didn't allow an earned run in 3.2 innings pitched and struck out six batters.  Altamirano tossed 2.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs.

The CSUB (2-2) offense had a breakout performance, outhitting the Cardinals 16-4 on the afternoon.  Will Picketts led the attack with four hits and pair of RBI. Jesse Rowley smoked a pair of doubles, while Sergio Robles, Ortega and Carrizosa also had two hits.  The Roadrunners nearly had even more on the scoreboard, but they had three baserunners cut down at the plate.

The Roadrunners will host Cal Poly on Tuesday night for the home opener at Hardt Field.  First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
