CSUB Falls to Binghamton Before Rain Cancels Doubleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's softball team kicked off the CSUN Early Bird Classic against the Binghamton Bearcats on Thursday. Despite taking an early, 1-0 lead, the Roadrunners fell behind BU and were unable to rally as the Bearcats took a 9-3 victory.

"Tough elements today," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, CSUB's eighth-year Head Coach. "We came out swinging, but our pitchers must hit better spots tomorrow. We know we can get after it to make the right adjustments."

The `Runners got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the second inning. Senior Chris Hipa, starting at second base, singled with one out and managed to swipe second base. Catcher Karah Wiseman sent a single to left field and brought Hipa home to give CSUB a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats answered right back in the bottom half of the second inning. After loading the bases with one out, first baseman Alex Guay drove in a pair of runs to give Binghamton the lead. Freshman Avery Fitch came into the game for starter Julie Lewis and recorded back-to-back outs to limit the damage for CSUB. BU added three more runs in the next inning thanks in large part to a two-run blast from Lauren Martinez.

Senior Nadia Amezcua came up clutch for the `Runners in the top of the fourth, driving in a run with a two-out single. The centerfielder's base hit brought home freshman Kayla Tadewosian, who doubled to lead off the frame, and made the score 5-2.

Binghamton used three hits and a pair of walks in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 9-2. The `Runners rallied for a run in the top of the seventh inning, but ultimately fell 9-3. Bakersfield's last run of the game came off the bat of Ariana Acedo. The sophomore made a pinch hit appearance and singled to center field to drive in Wiseman.

Wiseman, a native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., wrapped up the first game with a 2-for-3 performance while tallying a run, an RBI, and a stolen base. Four other `Runners tallied base hits on Friday including Hipa, who added a walk as well. Lewis (0-1) took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings. Fitch equaled Lewis' innings in the circle while freshman Kiara Azevedo threw the final 3.1 innings.

Game 2

The `Runners and Bearcats were only able to get three batters into the second game of Friday's doubleheader before the rain started coming down. Due to a full schedule of games at the CSUN Early Bird Classic on Saturday, the coaches agreed to cancel the second game.

Tomorrow

The `Runners (3-2) will return to Matador Diamond on Saturday for a rematch with Binghamton. First pitch is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. in Northridge.
