`Runners Host Education Day and NGWSD At Icardo This Week

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –After a three-game road stint in three states, CSU Bakersfield women's basketball will return home and close the regular season with five of six contests at Icardo Center. The Roadrunners welcome Chicago State and Kansas City this week for Education Day on Thursday and National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Saturday.

The Kangaroos are fifth in the Western Athletic Conference and one game ahead the `Runners while CSU sits in a two-way tie with Seattle U at the bottom of the standings. A pair of wins this week could position CSUB as high as third in the league depending on how UMKC does at Grand Canyon and if Utah Valley drops both their home contests against NM State and UTRGV.

"We've definitely got to continue to do what we need to do on our end to put ourselves in the best seeded position and string together some wins to build confidence as we gear up for the conference tournament," explained head coach Greg McCall. "It's something we're looking forward to – getting better each day and learning from our mistakes."

The last time the Roadrunners saw Chicago State and Kansas City was nearly a month ago on the road when the squad tallied back-to-back wins knocking off then-unbeaten KC and snapping the Cougars first win streak of the season.

Bakersfield is coming off two losses to the top two teams in the WAC but still boast one of the best defenses in the country holding top 10 spots in steals and top 25 in turnover margin and turnovers forced. Alexxus Gilbert continues to lead her team in scoring averaging 16.7 points overall and 16.9 in conference - fourth-best in the league. Malayasia McHenry joins Gilbert in double figure scoring with 10.7 on the season and has led CSUB in rebounding all year.

"We feel like we can beat anybody," added McCall. "Believe it or not, I still feel like we're the team to beat. They're going to play their best basketball when matched up against us. I think we're our biggest competition right now."

FAN ENGAGEMENT
Thursday afternoon will feature the first women's basketball Education Day, sponsored by Dr. Aaron E. Banks of Pediatric Heart Center. Local elementary schools will bus participating classes to the game for a fun-filled field trip to CSU Bakersfield. We're anticipating a sold-out venue and encourage fans to arrive before tip-off at 11 a.m.

Saturday is a color-out Pink Game in conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. A clinic hosted by current CSUB female athletes will be held in the Old Gym prior to the start of the women's basketball contest. For those girls interested in attending the clinic register here.
