`Runners Fall in Dual Meet with San Jose State

Haynes and Popham Lead Bakersfield with Two Wins Each

Bakersfield, Calif. – Jayssie Haynes and Mikayla Popham each won a pair of individual swims, but the CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team was outlasted in dual meet competition by visiting San Jose State on Tuesday morning. The shorthanded Roadrunners won three of the meet's first four races but faded down the stretch and eventually fell to the Spartans, 171.5 to 126.5. With the loss, CSUB wraps up the first half of the season with a record of 3-2 in dual meets.

"We had some great swims today, just not enough," said CSUB Director of Swimming and Diving Chris Hansen. "I hope we can learn from this. We got what we expected from Mikayla and Jayssie, but winning takes more than individual performances, it takes a depth of strong swims."

Popham swam the 1000 Free for the first time in her career and won in dominating fashion. The freshman finished in a time of 10:25.63 and bested the field by more than fourteen seconds in the process. She added a victory in the 500 Free touching the wall in 5:07.59 and was third in the 200 IM getting home in 2:12.10.

Haynes won both the 200 Free and 200 Breaststroke without trailing a single split. She finished her 200 Free in 1:55.11 and won the 200 Breaststroke by nearly three seconds in a time of 2:22.48. She finished just behind Popham in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.49.

Maddie Cosgrove and Tabea Mose also won individual races for Bakersfield. Cosgrove captured the 200 Fly in 2:07.01 and added a third-place finish in the 100 Fly, while Mose posted a 58.84 to win the 100 Back.

Ariane Skeggs finished second in both the 500 (5:10.56) and 1000 Freestyle (10:25.63) events and Maya Valdoria added a runner-up finish in the 200 Fly (2:08.86).

"Maddie and Tabea gave us great swims," said Hansen. "They're giving us the type of consistency we need in their events. Ariane continues to improve and has been swimming very well for us the last few weeks."

In the diving competition, Lauren Carson placed second in both disciplines. The sophomore posted a 165.30 in the 3 Meter event, before setting a new personal best in the 1 Meter with a score of 213.75.

The Roadrunner now face a quick turnaround, as they're back in action on Jan. 4, when they host a tri-meet with UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount beginning at noon.
