`Runners Fall to South Dakota State in Double OT

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A wild, double overtime game came down to a few last-second shots between CSU Bakersfield and South Dakota State. The visiting Jackrabbits took a two-point lead with four seconds remaining and a half-court heave fell short for the Roadrunners as SDSU held on for a 93-91 victory in the Icardo Center.

"I thought we showed some signs today," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "Shawn was a bright spot for us because we have someone we can throw the ball inside. That was a grueling game and we can do better with our conditioning…There's a lot to gain from this: learning guys' tendencies and where their strengths are…We'll get a chance to go back and learn a lot from this."

CSUB's offense was paced by a pair of outstanding performances from junior college transfer Shawn Stith and redshirt junior Taze Moore. Stith, a 6-foot-7 forward, dominated the paint to the tune of 26 points (10-12 FT) and eight rebounds. Moore, a high-flying guard, tallied 22 points, four steals, two blocks, two rebounds, and two assists against the Jackrabbits. Bakersfield also enjoyed 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds from junior Justin McCall. For SDSU, forward Douglas Wilson's 26 points and 13 rebounds helped lead his squad to victory.

Saturday night's game was part of the Western Athletic Conference-Summit League Challenge, which began a year ago. SDSU came to Bakersfield and helped the `Runners put on an exciting show for nearly 2,000 fans in the Icardo Center as neither team led by more than six points at any time in the game. After a halftime tie at 34-34, CSUB trailed for the first 10 minutes of the second half before tying the score again, 52-52.

There would be 13 tie scores throughout the game, including at 70-70 with 44 seconds remaining in regulation. SDSU's Baylor Scheierman hit his biggest shot of the game to tie the score and the `Runners were unable to find the game-winner as the two teams headed to overtime. With CSUB trailing in overtime, Stith hit a free throw with 26 seconds left to tie the score, 81-81, and Moore stole a pass right before the buzzer to force second overtime.

In the final period, SDSU jumped out to a five-point lead with 1:01 remaining. Redshirt junior De'Monte Buckingham drained a three-pointer with a hand in his face on the next possession and the `Runners earned a defensive stop on the other end. Moore got to the paint and converted to tie the score at 91-91 with 10 seconds left, but the Jackrabbits scored raced down the floor and managed to score with four seconds left after a scramble. Buckingham had a look from half court, but his heave came up just short of the rim, grazing the bottom of the net as CSUB fell in the thriller.

Bakersfield (1-1) will leave the comforts of the Icardo Center for the first time next week, taking a road trip to face Northern Iowa on Nov. 13. The Panthers boast a 2-0 record after defeating Old Dominion at home on Tuesday and taking a road win from Northern Illinois this afternoon. Tipoff on Wednesday in Cedar Falls, Iowa is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
