`Runners Drop Road Contest at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The three-pointer hurt the Roadrunner basketball team in Wednesday's road game as CSU Bakersfield dropped a tough fight against UNI, 67-55. After leading by just two points at halftime, the host Panthers knocked down 12 shots from behind the arc on the game to solidify the victory.

It was a tale of two halves as CSUB played UNI tight in the first half, trailing 22-24 at the break. The Panthers shot 61% from the field in the second period and pulled away from Bakersfield for the home win.

"We guarded them well in the first half, but we didn't in the second half," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "They have a good team and a good program. I'm proud of our guys for the way we fought and battled. We've got some things to figure out about our team, but I thought our guys gave great effort."

Redshirt junior Cam Allen came up just two points short of his career-high with 16 points on Wednesday night. The guard coupled his scoring effort with five assists for Allen's biggest game as a `Runner. De'Monte Buckingham tallied nine points and three rebounds on the night while Taze Moore chipped in seven points and five rebounds against the Panthers.

UNI relied heavily on the three-point shot early on, building a 9-6 lead while taking 9-of-10 total shots from behind the arc. A few minutes later, back-to-back long two-pointers by Greg Lee and a layup by Shawn Stith gave CSUB a 14-11 lead. UNI would answer with a 7-2 run to regain the lead, at 18-16 with five minutes to play in the opening period.

A long three-pointer just before halftime helped UNI take a 24-20 lead on the `Runners, but  Allen drove the lane and converted to pull CSUB within two points at the break. In the opening 20 minutes, Allen paced the `Runners with six points, two rebounds, two assists, and a steal. CSUB's defense also held the normally efficient Panthers under 30 percent from both the field and three-point range.

The long ball started working again for UNI early in the second half as the Panthers used the three-pointer to take a 41-29 lead on the `Runners less than five minutes in. With 7:45 left in the game, UNI knocked down its 11th three-pointer of the game to take its biggest lead to that point at 56-42.

The `Runners were able to bring the deficit to 10 points on two occasions down the stretch, but UNI prevented CSUB from making a comeback. The Panthers closed out the game with a 67-55 victory on their home court while CSUB's record fell to 1-2 on the young season.

Bakersfield will return to the Icardo Center on Friday with a quick turnaround before its next game. The `Runners will host Life Pacific for CSUB's annual Education Day game with an early tipoff schedule for 11 a.m.
