Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Sink Pirates in Icardo Center

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A first-half push carried into a second-half surge as the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team cruised to a 70-57 victory against Hampton University Friday night. The Roadrunners built their lead to as many as 24 points and they used a well-balanced effort to sink the Pirates in the Icardo Center.

"I thought there were times throughout the game tonight that we were as good as we have been this year," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's ninth-year Head Coach. "I didn't think we closed well. Maybe that had to do with trying to get some guys more playing time. I saw some glimpses tonight of how we could be…Overall, I thought it was a good effort from our guys. As their coach, I always want more…but we needed a win in the worst way and it was great for us to get a win."

CSUB enjoyed a well-rounded offensive attack with 10 of 11 `Runners scoring on Friday night. Bakersfield also dominated the glass, pulling down 53 rebounds to Hampton's 29. The rebounding total is the second-highest by any `Runner squad in CSUB's Division I history (66 vs. Pacifica, Feb. 23, 2013).

Redshirt junior Taze Moore posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two blocks. Bakersfield's co-captain, De'Monte Buckingham, chipped in 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals against the Pirates while redshirt sophomore Darrin Person Jr. added 10 points, six boards, and a block.

Bakersfield used a pair of big runs early in the contest to gain separation from Hampton. A 17-4 spurt put the `Runners ahead 24-6 midway through the first half. The Pirates picked up their effort heading into halftime, but CSUB held a 36-22 advantage at the break.

Buckingham, a redshirt junior guard, had eight points, four rebounds, and two steals in the first 20 minutes. Bakersfield shot inconsistently in the period, converting on just 36% of their field goal attempts, but the `Runner defense smothered Hampton. The Pirates made just 28% of their shots and 17% of their three-pointers in the opening period thanks to five CSUB blocks.

The `Runners continued momentum right into the second half, gaining a 22-point lead less than four minutes in at 46-24. Bakersfield held its biggest lead, 51-27, with 13:29 left on the clock and CSUB's advantage hovered around 20 points until the 3:22 mark. Hampton made a bit of a surge in the final minutes, knocking down several free throws down the stretch. The late push made the score seem closer than it was, but it was too little, too late as the `Runners closed out the night with a 70-57 victory.

Hampton came into the game boasting the nation's leading scorer in guard Jermaine Marrow. The senior entered Friday night's contest averaging almost 26 points a game. While Marrow did tally 21 points in the Icardo Center, he made just 6-of-18 (.333) field goal attempts as CSUB's help defense and junior Justin McCall's on-ball pressure hassled the Pirate all night long.

With the victory, CSUB improved to 3-5 on the young season. The `Runners are halfway through their four-game home stand and will be right back in action on Saturday, Nov. 30. Bakersfield will welcome San Diego Christian to the Icardo Center before hosting a White Out game against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
