Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bakersfield Downs SDC, Hosts UCSB on Tuesday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A strong start turned into a 30-point lead as the Roadrunner men's basketball team cruised to an 87-59 victory against San Diego Christian in the Icardo Center Saturday night. CSU Bakersfield doubled its halftime lead of 14 points to defeat the Hawks by 28 for the squad's second-straight victory.

"I want to thank our fans who came out tonight," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "With the weather changing and having back-to-back games during the holiday, I would not have faulted them for not coming out. To see our fans here looking forward to seeing our team play was something that brought joy to not only our coaches but also our players." The `Runners enjoyed the support of over 1,500 fans in the Icardo Center and hope to see a packed house during their next home game, set for Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Barnes continued on to discuss CSUB's upcoming matchup with future Big West Conference foe UC Santa Barbara: "We have a huge game coming up on Tuesday night and we have to be better than what we have been. Santa Barbara has a really good basketball team. Being our first opponent this season that's in the Big West, which we're going into next year, we want a great showing here as far as fans and also, as our team, we want to play well."

CSUB is expecting a big crowd for Tuesday night's White Out game as the `Runners are giving away white t-shirts to students and white pom poms to fans. Bakersfield also asks that fans wear white to the contest with the Gauchos to help  the `Runners intimidate their future conference mates.

In Saturday night's win over San Diego Christian, CSUB once again looked to a balance scoring output with four student-athletes posting double digits and all 11 `Runners getting on the score sheet. Juniors De'Monte Buckingham (16), Czar Perry (13), and Greg Lee (13) led the way in scoring while fellow junior Taze Moore chipped in 11 points.

Perry added six assists and five rebounds for a complete effort in the Icardo Center. Junior college transfer Ronne Readus tallied eight points and eight rebounds while patrolling the Kern Schools Court's blue paint. CSUB also outrebounded its opponent, 37-23, winning the battle of the boards in eight of nine games so far this season.

The `Runners and Hawks went back and forth for the first five minutes of Saturday night's contest in Bakersfield. A 4-0 run by CSUB pushed the `Runners ahead by nine points at 18-9. The `Runners took a double-digit lead at 25-14 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half and they never looked back.

After leading by 14 points at halftime, Bakersfield ballooned its lead to 22 points less than five minutes into the second period on a Buckingham three-pointer. With 6:38 left on the clock, Lee converted an and-1 to give CSUB its biggest lead, 75-45. The visiting Hawks briefly chipped away at Bakersfield's large advantage, but the `Runners pushed their lead back out to 30 points multiple times in the final minute and eventually won by 28, 87-59.

CSUB earned its second-straight victory in the Icardo Center Saturday night and improved to 4-5 on the season. UC Santa Barbara will make the trip to Bakersfield on Tuesday for a clash with the `Runners set to tip off at 7 p.m. The Gauchos have a 4-3 record on the season including losses to UCLA, Rice, and Oregon State, but the visiting squad will ride the momentum of a three-game win streak into Kern County.
