Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Surge Sends Sam Houston Past CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A second-half surge helped the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team rally against a strong Sam Houston State squad on Tuesday night, but the visiting Bearkats made a late push and hit their free throws down the stretch to earn a 74-65 victory in the Icardo Center.

"They have been a very successful program and they do a really good job with their team," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners, of CSUB's opponent. "In the second half, I thought they made some plays as far as getting to the free throw line and I thought we fouled too much, which gave them opportunities to get some buckets pretty freely."

Barnes continued on to discuss his squad's performance against Sam Houston State: "I really like our team as far as the effort we gave. I thought this was a better game than the last two games. We still have got a long ways to go, but I was encouraged with a lot of the things that happened tonight."

SHSU jumped out to a quick lead in the first half and the Bearkats built their way to a 27-16 advantage with just over four minutes remaining. Bakersfield responded with a 9-2 run down the stretch to head to the locker room trailing 25-29 at halftime.

A strong start to the second half helped the Bearkats push their lead back out to eight points. CSUB began chipping away and finally tied the score at 45-45 with just under 10 minutes left on a Czar Perry drive to the hoop. The `Runners would hold a two-point advantage at 51-49 when Greg Lee nailed a pair of free throws, but SHSU quickly regained the lead and surged ahead once again.

With 81 seconds left on the clock, the Bearkats hit a three-point dagger, going ahead of CSUB 64-57, a strike from which Bakersfield was unable to recover. The `Runners continued to get into the paint and score, but SHSU hit 19-of-21 free throws on the game, sealing the contest at the charity stripe. The visitors held on for a 74-65 victory on the Kern Schools Court.

CSUB looked to junior Justin McCall's 14 points to lead the way while the forward added five rebounds. Redshirt junior Taze Moore did a little bit of everything, tallying 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a career-high four blocks against the Bearkats. A total of four `Runners scored in double digits on Tuesday while CSUB won the rebounding battle once again, 36-25.

Bakersfield (2-5) will be back in the Icardo Center on Black Friday with a game scheduled against Hampton. The `Runners will tip off at 7 p.m. against the Pirates with a great opportunity for a Black Friday deal on $1 hot dogs and $2 ice cream. CSUB also has a game on Saturday, Nov. 30, as San Diego Christian will come to town for another 7 p.m. contest.
