CSUB Breaks D1 Wins Record, Qualifies for WAC Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team closed its 2019 regular season on a high note – with a guaranteed spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after a 1-0 shutout victory over the Grand Canyon Lopes on Saturday night.  Bakersfield also reset the program's Division I record for most wins in an individual season and posted the second-best conference finish as the Roadrunners improved to 9-9-1 overall and 4-4 in WAC.

"Unbelievable effort from our group once again when it counted the most," explained head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "Going into the game knowing you must get a win to make the tournament is not an easy task. Especially on the road."

"Beating a quality GCU program after 16 seasons without a win and reaching nine wins for the first time at the Division I level are all extras for us, added Vecchio."

It was relatively quiet in first half with chances on goal scarce from either team. The momentum shifted, however, in favor of CSUB in the 28th minute.

Sophie Freeman played a ball into the box from left field straight at GCU's goalkeeper. She handled it but a crashing Lopes defender knocked the ball out of her hands and at the feet of Eszter Toth who was there to clean up the rebound for her fifth goal on the season.

In the second half, GCU had a break away up the middle of the pitch, but Jeenna Bostrom made a great defensive effort to sprint back into the play and make the slide tackle to prevent the equalizer.

CSUB goalie Andrea Neves made a huge save in the 79th minute of the match that helped seal the win. It was the Lopes final attempt that was on goal. Neves grabbed a ball that slightly bounced off her, but she quickly regained possession and secured the save as GCU strikers advanced frantically.

Bakersfield tabs the WAC Tournament fourth seed and will have to get through fifth seed UTRGV on Wednesday (Nov. 6) before advancing to play the host and No. 1 team in Seattle U on Friday (Nov. 8). Games streamed in the United States will only be available on ESPN+ while games streamed internationally will only be available on the WAC Digital Network.
