Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

CSUB Resets Win Record, UTRGV Advances to Semifinals

SEATTLE, Wash. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team fell short advancing to the next round of the Western Athletic Conference but still made history with the 1-1 double overtime draw. The Roadrunners took the fifth-seeded UTRGV Vaqueros to their final penalty attempt, but were outshot 2-0.

"It was a tough way to go out, but I am extremely proud of this group and everything we accomplished this season! proclaimed Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio. "Whether we won or lost, we always did it with class."

The tie put Bakersfield's 2019 overall record at 9-9-2 and as a result, the `Runners reset the program's season record percentage to .500 – a feat that hadn't been reached since 2000.

It was a game that had viewers on edge with back-and-forth action nonstop. Although RGV maintain a higher possession and shot total, CSUB had put together just as many quality chances at goal.

Andrea Neves clawed a deep shot from RGV's Emily Zapata over the top of the crossbar that gave way to the first of three consecutive corners for the Vaqueros. Neves picked up a pair of solid saves from the attempts in the first 10 minutes of the match.

CSUB got its first shot off a throw in from Dana Neff that was headed by Chelsee Duran then Giselle Michel's header almost grazed past the Vaqueros goalkeeper, but she was able to get a hand on it and tap the shot on goal out of bounds.

RGV's striker Zapata had another chance at goal in the first half when she brought down a touch with one foot and took a hard shot on goal at close range with her other foot, but Neves was there and able to stay on top of the rebound keeping the match tied 0-0.

CSUB opened scoring in the 37th minute when a loose Vaqueros pass was pounced on by Darian Tatum. She played a ball to Eszter Toth in the box who, despite no space and a difficult angle under pressure, netted her sixth goal of the season and lifted the Roadrunners 1-0 over UTRGV.
Harvey had an opportunity in the 42nd minute of the match when she headed a ball from in the box off a cross from Jordan Martinez, but RGV's keeper was there to scoop up the shot.

In the 53rd minute, Gina Steiner sent a through ball to Zapata who played the ball just under the hands of Neves who had come off the goal line to challenge the play.

One hundred and ten minutes wasn't enough to find a winner instead it took RGV's fifth and final penalty attempt to quiet the Roadrunners.

"Thanks to our senior class for the endless contribution to CSUB and our soccer program," added Vecchio. They adcanced this program so much since we took over two years ago."
