`Runners Ready For 2019 WAC Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Not qualifying for the 2019 Western Athletic Conference Tournament was not an option for CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team after missing postseason in 2018. Behind a spectacular close, CSUB won four out of its last five league matches to earn its bid.

Bakersfield earned the WAC tournament fourth seed after being in a tie for eighth before the twelve-point conference run. The `Runners will see fifth-seeded San Jose State on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

SJSU enters the tournament with an overall record of 5-11-2. All of the Spartans wins and draws this season have come in conference as they finished 5-4-2 in WAC games. San Jose State is led offensively by Castro who tallied a team-best 30 points and nine goals in 2019. The Spartans have five different athletes on their roster with a game-winner.

The Roadrunners head to Colorado with a league record of 6-5-0 and 7-10-0 overall. Ryan Goldsmith leads CSUB in scoring with 18 points off seven goals and four assists. Niklas Korber is the only other `Runner who joins Goldsmith in double figure scoring. He tallied six goals and two assists for a total of fourteen-points.

CSUB is led defensively by redshirt junior goalkeeper Detre Bell who made 49 saves, many of them impressive, and sports a 1.57 goals against average.

The `Runners and San Jose State opened WAC play with a match at SJSU back on Sept. 28. The Spartans came out on top 3-2, one of seven of CSUB's losses that were decided by one goal. Bakersfield allowed 19 goals during conference, but just four in its last five contests.

Bakersfield and San Jose State kickoff on Wednesday at Noon at Cadet Soccer Stadium in Colorado. The match will be streamed domestically from ESPN+ and internationally on the WAC Digital Network.

The winner of the CSUB/SJSU first round opener advances to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 15 where top-seeded Seattle U (10-0-1, WAC) awaits.
