Vukobrat, Blocking Lead CSUB to Win Over Seattle U

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team went to the fifth and deciding set in Saturday afternoon's Western Athletic Conference match against Seattle U and the Roadrunners outlasted the Redhawks for a 3-2 victory in the Icardo Center.

Sophomore Milica Vukobrat led the way for the `Runners, putting together a career match. The native of Novi Sad Serbia posted her second career double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs while adding six blocks against the Redhawks. As a team, the `Runners reset the school's Division I record for total blocks in a match with 17. Ally Barber led the team with a career-high eight blocks in the victory.

On the offensive end, CSUB enjoyed another pair of `Runners recording double-digit kills in middle blocker Brooke Boiseau (14) and outside hitter Hayley McCluskey (12). Senior Rafa Bonifacio also chipped in nine kills on Saturday. Redshirt senior Sidney Wicks added 25 assists while fellow setter Leisa Elisaia contributed 23 assists of her own. Wicks is now just 49 assists away from reaching the 2,000 career assists milestone. Libero Jojo Ishida tied her career-high with 26 digs against the Redhawks.

The opening set was tight all the way to the finish. CSUB used a 3-0 run to put some pressure on Seattle U at 23-24, but the Redhawks' Kailee Kurokawa finished the thought of a comeback with a kill for a 25-23 win.

CSUB responded to its first-set struggles with vigor, jumping out to a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Bakersfield continued to surge, gaining a 21-13 lead, before tying the match at one set apiece with a 25-16 victory. Hana Makonova and Boiseau sealed the deal on Set Point, sending a thundering block down to the Seattle U side of the court.

Set 3 was close up until CSUB put together a 5-1 run to take a 22-17 lead. SU tried to climb back in, but it was too late as sophomore Hayley McCluskey sent a kill to the floor to put the `Runners up 2-1 with a 25-22 win.

Bakersfield found itself trailing Seattle early in the fourth set, but the `Runners clawed back in to trail 12-13. The Redhawks continued to keep their hosts at an arm's distance and tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 victory.

In the deciding set, the `Runners led early, but trailed the Redhawks at 11-12. A kill from Boiseau tied the score before an SU attack error gave the `Runners a one-point edge. From a 13-13 tie, Vukobrat blasted a kill for the lead and then teamed up with Barber for an emphatic block on match point, giving CSUB a 15-13 victory to seal the match.

CSUB (7-9, 2-2 WAC) will head back out on the road next week for a pair of tough, WAC matches. The `Runners will take on NM State Oct. 10 and UTRGV Oct. 12 before returning home to host Grand Canyon Oct. 17.
