CSUB Falls in Tough Fight at WAC-Leading NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The CSU Bakersfield volleyball team went head-to-head with the Western Athletic Conference-leading NM State Aggies on Thursday night. The Roadrunners roared back from a 2-0 deficit to take Set 3 in dominant fashion, but the Aggies held off CSUB in a tight fourth set to seal a 3-1 victory on their home court.

Despite the loss, CSUB Director of Volleyball Giovana Melo said her `Runners showed signs of being contenders in Las Cruces: "I saw a team that can fight and is capable of so much more. We have it in us."

On the match, a pair of `Runner underclassmen led CSUB on the offensive front. Redshirt freshman Hana Makonova posted a season-high 10 kills while fellow middle hitter Brooke Boiseau equaled her teammate's offensive output. Sophomore Leisa Elisaia tallied a career-high 27 assists while adding 11 digs for a team-leading seventh double-double of the season.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick, 8-1 lead over the `Runners in the opening set. Unfazed by the early struggles, CSUB rallied to draw within three points at 8-11, but NMSU surged again later in the game, taking a 20-12 lead. The Aggies finished off Set 1 with a 25-15 victory.

CSUB and NMSU went toe-to-toe through the early parts of the second set with Bakersfield trailing its host, 9-11. The Aggies went on a 9-2 run to gain some breathing room and claim the second set with a 25-16 victory.

In the middle of the third set, CSUB put together a 5-2 run to go ahead of NMSU, 15-11. The `Runners surged to a 20-14 advantage as NMSU tried to call a timeout to slow the Bakersfield momentum. The break did not do the trick as CSUB cruised to a 25-17 win, sending the match to the fourth set.

In Game 4, neither team was able to gain much of an advantage until NMSU put together a 5-2 run to go ahead 22-18. A Milica Vukobrat ace helped the `Runners stave off one set point, but the Aggies ended up sealing the 3-1 victory with a 25-21 win in Set 4.

The `Runners (7-10, 2-3 WAC) have one more WAC match on the road before they can head home to the comforts of the Icardo Center. On Saturday, Oct. 12, UTRGV will welcome CSUB to Edinburg, Texas for a 10 a.m. (PT) match.
