Boiseau Joins CSUB Blocking Elite, `Runners Fall to UVU

OREM, Utah – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team battled hard on Thursday night, but the Roadrunners fell to Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Valley on the road. The Wolverines outlasted the `Runners in four tight sets, taking the match 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25).

"We were better as a team today," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "We just need to do a little bit better job handling the pressure moments."

On the match, redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau led the way with a match-high 16 kills and six blocks. With the defensive effort, Boiseau moved into 10th all-time in CSUB's history with 195 career block assists.

Sophomore Milica Vukobrat posted another double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Setter Leisa Elisaia chipped in 30 assists, two aces, six digs, and two blocks against the Wolverines. Libero Rafa Bonifacio tallied a career-high 28 digs in just four sets on Halloween.

Utah Valley inched its way out to a 10-6 lead in the first set and the Wolverines were able to keep the `Runners at an arm's distance the rest of the set. UVU ended up taking the first set, 25-19, despite four kills from redshirt sophomore Boiseau.

In the second set, a Vukobrat kill followed by an Elisaia ace helped the `Runners take a 10-8 lead early on. Back-to-back kills from Vukobrat pushed Bakersfield's lead to four points at 20-16, but UVU answered with a 4-1 run to close the gap. From a 23-23 tie, Emily Hansen picked up her fifth kill of the set before Elisaia and Boiseau combined for a block to earn a 25-23 victory.

Utah Valley went on a 7-1 to gain some breathing room at 21-14 in the third set, but CSUB answered back with four-straight points to keep the game close. The Wolverines would not give up the lead and closed out the set with a 25-18 victory to earn a 2-1 lead on the match.

An Elisaia ace gave the `Runners an 18-15 lead in Set 4, but UVU made a strong finish to win the set and the match. The Wolverines closed the game with an 8-2 run to take the fourth set 25-22.

The `Runners (8-15, 3-8 WAC) have one more road match this weekend before returning to Bakersfield for a three-game homestand. This Saturday, CSUB is slated to take on Seattle U on the road with a scheduled 1 p.m. first serve.
