McCluskey Posts 18 Kills in CSUB Loss at Seattle U

SEATTLE – A battle raged in the Pacific Northwest on Saturday afternoon as CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team clashed against Seattle U. The host Redhawks outlasted the Roadrunners in a thrilling fourth set, earning a 3-1 victory (25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 28-30) in the Western Athletic Conference match.

Getting back to the stellar play she has produced all season, sophomore Hayley McCluskey led all `Runners with 18 kills on .324 hitting in Seattle while redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau chipped in 12 kills and six blocks. Right side hitter Milica Vukobrat added seven kills, ten digs, and five service aces while junior Emily Hansen tallied seven kills, six digs, and five blocks against the Redhawks.

The match's opening set was back and forth until Bakersfield blew it open with an 8-0 run. The Redhawks traded points with the `Runners, but CSUB closed out Set 1 with a 25-18 victory behind McCluskey's five kills.

Another tight set was spread open when Seattle U used a 9-4 run to earn a 23-17 lead. CSUB won four of the next five points, but the Redhawks eventually finished off a 24-21 win.

The third set continued with close play as the Redhawks held a narrow, 15-12 lead over their visitors at the media timeout. From a 16-15 lead, Seattle U won the set on a 9-3 run, taking a 2-1 lead on the match.

Trailing the Redhawks 18-15, CSUB answered right back to take a four-point lead on a 7-0 run. In a wild finish, Seattle U answered with a 6-1 run to set up a match point opportunity. The `Runners would fend off four match points and would earn a set point at 28-27, but Seattle U proceed to win the next three points, clinching the match with a 30-28 victory.

CSUB (8-16, 3-9 WAC) has wrapped up its road trip and will return to the Icardo Center for its final three home matches of the season. The `Runners will be busy Nov. 7-11 with three matches over the six-day span. On Monday, Nov. 11, Bakersfield's home schedule will close with one final match in the Icardo Center for seniors Sidney Wicks, Ally Barber, Rafa Bonifacio, and Hannah Manzanares.
