`Runners Fall to Hot Hands of Utah Valley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A slow start saw the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team fall behind early in Thursday night's Western Athletic Conference matchup against Utah Valley. The Roadrunners rallied to put together a pair of strong sets against the Wolverines, but UVU fought off CSUB's advances to earn a 3-0 win in the Icardo Center.

"We weren't passing well tonight and Utah Valley is one of the best blocking teams in the conference," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "When we're not passing well and we're not playing in system, it doesn't help us. After the match, we talked about moving on from our mistakes."

CSUB's standout sophomores once again led the way for the `Runners in Thursday night's loss. Right side Milica Vukobrat paced her team with 12 kills on a .500 hitting percentage while also tallying seven digs. Brooke Boiseau and Hayley McCluskey each posted nine kills against the Wolverines in the Icardo Center. Setters Sidney Wicks and Leisa Elisaia recorded 20 assists and 17 assists, respectively.

Utah Valley (5-10, 2-1 WAC) jumped out to a quick start in the opening set and never looked back. The Wolverines held their biggest lead of the set at 15-6 and finished off a 25-17 win for a 1-0 lead on the match.

Sets 2 and 3 fared much tighter with the `Runners giving the Wolverines a good run in each game, but Utah Valley held off CSUB for a pair of 25-22 victories. UVU's Kazna Tarawhiti finished off the match with her 14th kill as the visiting squad earned a 3-0 sweep on the Kern Schools Court. As a team, UVU hit .327 on the match, the second-highest of any opponent CSUB has faced all season.

Bakersfield (6-9, 1-2 WAC) has one WAC match remaining this weekend as Seattle U (9-8, 0-3 WAC) will come to town on Saturday. "Seattle U is pretty physical," Melo said of CSUB's next opponent. "We have to play be able to play fast and pass well against them."

The Redhawks suffered their third-straight 3-0 WAC sweep at the hands of Grand Canyon on Thursday night in Phoenix. CSUB and Seattle U are scheduled to begin Saturday's Pride Day matchup at 1 p.m. in the Icardo Center.
