Blocking Powers CSUB Past Chicago State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing two sets to none on its home court, CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team rallied to win in the deciding set against Chicago State (22-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-10, 15-3). Redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau led the way for the Roadrunners, posting 17 kills and tying her own CSUB Division I record with 10 blocks.

Boiseau had plenty of help on CSUB's blue Kern Schools Court. Fellow sophomore Milica Vukobrat posted a career high with 17 kills on Saturday while tallying 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. The pair helped CSUB post 15.0 team blocks, which ties for third most in a single match in CSUB's Division I history.

Middle blocker Hana Makonova also had a career high as she recorded 16 kills on .400 hitting against the Cougars. Sophomore setter Leisa Elisaia registered career-highs in assists (46) and digs (19) on the way to a team-best 10th double-double of the year. In her fourth-straight match as CSUB's starting libero, Rafa Bonifacio has now recorded 20+ digs each match after making the transition from outside hitter.

In a back and forth first set, a 3-0 run gave Chicago State three set points at 24-21. The `Runners successfully staved off one set point, but the Cougars finished off the opening game on the next rally to take a 25-22 win.

From a 10-10 tie, Chicago State went on a 6-1 spurt to gain some early breathing room. CSUB later trailed 13-18, but a 5-1 run tied the score at 19-19. A 24-24 score gave the set its 13th tie, but Chicago State capitalized and won Set 2, 26-24.

Down 7-6 in the third set, CSUB went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead of the Cougars. From a 12-9 advantage, the `Runners put together a 7-0 run with Mapuhola Sekona serving to open up a huge lead. The `Runners coasted to a 25-17 win thanks to five kills each from Vukobrat and Makonova.

With the momentum rolling in their favor, CSUB jumped out to a 9-3 in Set 4 and extended their advantage to 10 points at 16-6. Chicago State could find no answer for the `Runners who cruised to a 25-10 victory and sent the match to the fifth set for the third time in CSUB's last four matches.

Bakersfield leaped out to a 6-0 lead in the deciding set and never looked back. The `Runners extended their lead to 12-2 before finishing the match with a 15-3 victory.

CSUB (8-14, 3-7 WAC) earned valuable momentum with Saturday's win and will attempt to keep it going in a pair of road matches next week. The `Runners are headed to play Utah Valley on Halloween before rounding the road trip at Seattle U on Nov. 1.
