Final Home Matches Feature UIW, UTRGV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On the back of a strong performance vs. Seattle U, CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team welcomes Incarnate Word Friday (Oct. 25) and UTRGV on Sunday (Oct. 27).

It was after a 3-2 conference loss in September that Bakersfield went on to win its next two WAC matches at home. Now in a similar position, the Roadrunners have an opportunity to repeat this weekend and move up in standings.

One point behind a tie for eighth and one win from a tie with Kansas City for fifth, Bakersfield is right where they need to be and WAC tournament seeding is still wide open with five matches left to play for CSUB.

It's been three seasons since Incarnate Word came to Bakersfield. The 1-0 shutout in 2016 was also the first and last time the Roadrunners beat them. The match on Friday is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.

RGV has come to the Main Soccer Field once since 2015 when the all-time series began. In those four matchups, CSUB tallied a point on the road from a 0-0 draw two season ago.

Four seniors (Carlos Arroyo, Rodrigo Sarmiento, Ryan Goldsmith and Niklas Korber) will be recognized on Sunday at Senior Night. The ceremony is intended to begin at 5:30 p.m. with a 6 p.m. start for the match.

When asked about Arroyo's contributions to the team, Head Coach Richie Grant had high praises: "Carlos has been a wonderful ambassador of when it means to be a student-athlete. He competes at a high level every day and brings so much energy to our team each and every practice."

Rodrigo Sarmiento played in nine straight matches, making eight starts while filling in for injured Detre Bell last season. Sarmiento was named the WAC Player of the Week after blanking GCU and UNLV. He recorded three straight shutouts against Grand Canyon, UNLV and No. 7 Air Force, the first time that had happened at CSUB since 2014.

Ryan Goldsmith was CSUB's most productive offensive player a season ago. He led the team with five goals, tied for team-high with four assists and led the team with 14 points. Goldsmith produced game-winning goals in the season opener against Bethesda and the upset of No. 7 Air Force. He is the second-leading scoring with nine points (4g, 1a).

Niklas Korber is the only graduating four-year letterwinner. He has had a knack for scoring since joining the Roadrunners in 2016. Korber tallied three goals as a freshman, two in his sophomore year, three last season as a junior and has four in 2019 with five contests left in his final campaign. He leads the CSUB roster in scoring with 10 points (4g, 2a).
