Lancers Outlast `Runners in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A ferocious battle raged in the CBU Events Center as CSU Bakersfield and California Baptist played all five sets in Monday night's Western Athletic Conference matchup. The Roadrunners forced the fifth set with a dominant win in Set 4, but the host Lancers held off Bakersfield for a 3-2 victory (21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-10, 12-15) on their home court.

"We have been a little inconsistent, which I expected to be this year," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "I think we were doing some really good things, but in clutch moments we aren't taking care of it. We need to be better in the fifth set."

Bakersfield looked to the swing of redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau, who tallied a season-high 19 kills on a .395 hitting percentage to go with four blocks. CSUB's pair of setters, Sidney Wicks (39 assists, 13 digs) and Leisa Elisaia (13 assists, 16 digs), both tallied double-doubles against the Lancers.

Joining Boiseau, four other `Runners tallied 10+ kills including Hana Makonova, Hayley McCluskey, Milica Vukobrat, and Emily Hansen. Makonova and Hansen both dominated the net, tallying five blocks each in Riverside. Senior Rafa Bonifacio, playing just her second match as CSUB's libero, recorded 26 digs against California Baptist.

In the opening set, CBU gained some separation at 16-10, but the `Runners worked their way back into the game to trail by just one point at 21-20. Bakersfield's valiant effort came up short as the Lancers held off CSUB's advances to take the first set, 25-21. Boiseau, a middle blocker, led all student-athletes with seven kills in the opening frame.

The `Runners responded well in the second game, jumping out to an early lead and riding that momentum to a 16-11 advantage. Bakersfield continue to surge and earned a 25-18 victory to tie the match at 1-1. Setter Sidney Wicks had 26 assists through the first two sets.

In the third set, the Lancers began to pull away in the middle of the game and gained a 19-13 lead. A 4-1 run helped the `Runners pull within three points at 19-22, but CBU once again held off Bakersfield to take a 2-1 lead on the match with a 25-20 win.

Bakersfield jumped out to a 13-5 lead in Set 4 and extended its advantage to 22-8 later in the game. CSUB dominated throughout the set and won 25-10, sending the two teams to their third-straight five-set match in the series. At that point in the match, Boiseau had recorded a season-high 18 kills.

The `Runners clawed their way to a 7-5 lead, but CBU rallied with a 6-0 run to go ahead 11-7. CSUB would not go down without a fight and tied the game at 12-12 thanks to a 5-1 spurt. The last run of the night would go to the Lancers, who won the final three points to win the match, 3-2, with a 15-12 victory in Set 5.

Monday night's match started a busy week for the `Runners (7-13, 3-7 WAC), who will bus home from Riverside and prepare for a pair of home matches later this week. On Thursday, Oct. 24, CSUB will host Kansas City for CSUB's Lace Up for Cancer match. On Saturday, Oct. 26, Chicago State will come to Bakersfield as the `Runners host their Dig Pink game.
