Boiseau, Elisaia Lead `Runners in Loss at UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – Another tough battle resulted in a loss for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team in Saturday's Western Athletic Conference road match. The Roadrunners came out swinging against The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, but CSUB eventually fell 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 19-25, 25-27) against the host Vaqueros.

"We will continue to work to get better," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's sixth-year Director of Volleyball. "We need to get better at hitting outside hitters' swings."

Redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau tied her season-best mark with 17 kills on .441 hitting, good enough to lead all student-athletes on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Hana Makonova chipped in nine kills and a season-high seven blocks. Sophomore Leisa Elisaia blew away her previous career-high with 44 assists while the setter tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 11 digs.

The opening set was a back and forth game until CSUB went on a 7-0 sprint to run away with the game. Boiseau and Hayley McCluskey combined for five kills in the run, pushing CSUB to a 25-16 victory in the UTRGV Fieldhouse. In the opening set, Boiseau led all student-athletes with six kills while McCluskey and Milica Vukobrat chipped in four kills each.

The Vaqueros used a 12-1 run to gain some early breathing room in Set 2, taking an 13-5 lead over the `Runners. CSUB would not go down quietly, answering with a 5-0 run to make the deficit just five points at 10-15. RGV earned set point at 24-15, but the `Runners won five-straight points before the Vaqueros could finish off the set with a 25-20, tying the match at one set apiece.

CSUB and RGV were locked in another tight game in the third set as the `Runners went to the media timeout leading 15-14. UTRGV used an 8-0 run to pull ahead 23-16 and eventually took a 2-1 lead thanks to a 25-19 victory.

UTRGV pulled ahead in the fourth set, but the `Runners clawed back and tied the game at 21-21 with back-to-back blocks. The two teams found themselves tied twice more, including at 25-25, but UTRGV won the final two points to seal the match with a 27-25 win.

CSUB (7-10, 2-3 WAC) will head home to prepare for a tough task against one of the WAC's leaders, Grand Canyon (14-3, 4-1 WAC). The Lopes are coming to Bakersfield on Thursday, Oct. 17 before the `Runners head back out on the road to face California Baptist on Monday, Oct. 21.
