CSUB Defeats East Bay and LMU, Tritons Down `Runners

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Squaring off against future Big West opponent UC San Diego, the Tritons defeated the Roadrunner men's swimming and diving team 169-131 and the women 171-126.  The women's team also competed against Cal State East Bay and Loyola Marymount defeating them handily, 222-66 and 241-47, respectively.

After the foursome of Alyssa Madero, Isabella Magalong, Autumn D'Arcy and Abigail Abshire took second place in the 200-yard medley relay to start the meet (1:48.43), Sabrina Zavala continued her recent dominance of the distance events, touching the wall first in the 1,000 free in 10:31.31.  Later in the meet she added a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:08.28).

Junior Jayssie Haynes had another big meet for CSUB.  She had the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.05) and had a pair of second-place finishes.  Haynes took second in the 200 free (1:54.20) and finished behind freshman teammate Autumn D'Arcy in the 200 individual medley (2:10.24).  D'Arcy won the event in 2:08.39.  The freshman star had two more first-place finishes on the afternoon, touching the wall first in the 100 butterfly (55.64) and the 50 free (24.20).

"Sabrina continued to dominate the distance free events as did Jayssie in the breast and Autumn in the fly," said Director of Swimming Chris Hansen.  "These three ladies are going to be force at the WAC championship.  Like always the ladies came to race and looked great doing it."

Magalong had a third-place showing in the 100 breast (1:09.25) and junior Maddie Cosgrove placed second in the 200 fly (2:06.68).  Abshire nearly finished first in the 100 free, finishing .19 seconds behind the top finisher (53.37).

The `Runners finished the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:35.08).  Abshire, Cosgrove, Alisa Cooke and Haynes teamed for the runner-up finish.

The men got off to a hot start as Kris Rogic, Jake Chir, Loren Gillilan and Noah Hickman won the 200 medley relay in 1:32.62, nearly two seconds in front of the Triton contingent.  Sophomore Benji Duenas followed with a season-best time in the 1,000 free (9:41.08) as he finished in first.

"The men had a close meet," said Hansen.  "We were winning at the first break but UCSD took off the second half.   Benji Duenas and Adam Estrella had a great day.   Ryan (Brimer), Jake (Chir), Greg (Lee), Justice (Kramer) and Kris (Rogic) continued to swim fast.  Our distance swimmers where a little off today and need to get ready for conference.  They need to finish their races."

In the 200 free, Ryan Brimer and Loren Gillilan went 2-3, finishing in 1:41.95 and 1:42.81, respectively.  The Roadrunners continued their quick start in the 100 back as Rogic, Julio Alcantar and James Skuse finished 2-3-4.  Rogic nearly won the event, finishing in 50.89, just .29 seconds behind the winner.

The CSUB divers dominated on the 1-meter board on Saturday.  Nate Cummins won the event, scoring a 253.79, while teammates Adam Estrella and Drew Huerta finished second and third, respectively.  Huerta's score of 241.42 was a career best.  Later in the meet, Estrella won the 3-meter event with a score of 257.40 and Huerta finished second (228.37).

Justice Kramer touched the wall first in the 200 fly (1:55.48) and Gillilan added second-place showings in the 100 free (46.44) and the 100 fly (48.74).  Richie Campbell claimed second in the 50 free (21.37), finishing just .05 seconds in front of teammate Noah Hickman.  Senior Jake Chir touched the wall in second in the 100 breast (57.68).

Rogic will compete next weekend at the TYR Swim Series at the University of Tennessee.  The rest of `Runners will take next weekend off and will complete the regular season on Saturday, January 19 when they host Fresno Pacific for Senior Day.
