Women's Basketball Hosts California Baptist On Thursday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After picking up a pair of conference wins on the road last week, CSU Bakersfield will return to Icardo Center for a single contest on Thursday against newest Western Athletic Conference member California Baptist. The first intrastate league clash for Bakersfield is on tap for 7 p.m. tomorrow night.

The Lancers are coming off a ninety-point win over Westcliff University, a team the Roadrunners beat earlier in the season but by fifty-four points. CBU has three losses and one win in WAC play after falling to NM State, UTRGV, and Kansas City before handing Chicago State a thirty-seven-point loss. All three losses were single-digits – seven or less points.

The first and last time Bakersfield and California Baptist met was sixteen years ago when the Roadrunners opened the series in 2003 with a win against then Division II Pacific West Conference powerhouse. The two institutions are just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from each other and naturally creates an inherent intrastate rivalry.

CSUB is a half game out from first place after going on the road and earning key victories over UMKC and CSU last week. Alexxus Gilbert continues to lead her team and the league in scoring with 19.2 points per game. JJ Johnson and Ashley Austin join Gilbert in double-figure scoring averaging 12.2 and 10.3, respectively since conference started. Malayasia McHenry and Vanessa Austin are close behind with 9.0 and 8.8 points a game.
