`Runners Drop Late Comeback At The Buzzer

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball dropped a heartbreaking two-point, 59-61, decision in the last two seconds of the contest at home against New Mexico State University on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies would improve 10-6, 2-1 WAC while the Roadrunners fell 6-11, 2-2 WAC on the year.

NM State opened scoring early in the first period but five-straight points from Malaysia McHenry seemed to shift the momentum towards Bakersfield – at least momentarily. The next five minutes was all NMSU who used an 8-0 run to regain and extend their lead 12-5 with three and a half minutes left in the quarter. The score remained a single-digit deficit through the first 10 minutes with the Roadrunners down 11-19.

CSUB began to find their groove offensively and clamp down a bit more on the defensive end in the second quarter. In a three-minute stretch the `Runners were able to bring the score within three down 20-23 with just under seven minutes in the half but then allowed the Aggies to build a double-digit lead, 38-28, into the locker rooms at the end of the period.

Although Bakersfield outscored NM State 19-13 in the third quarter, it wasn't until nearly two and a half minutes into the period that they got their first basket down 31-44 with 7:35 on the clock and the deficit didn't dwindle to single-digits until less than a minute and a half left in the quarter when JJ Johnson hit two free throws to cut the score to 43-51. Four-straight points to close the period would position the Roadrunners within four entering the final 10 minutes of the contest.

The fourth quarter might have been the most responsive CSUB had been on the offensive end this season. The `Runners kept the score a one possession game up until taking the lead 57-55 with two and a half minutes left. The game was tied 59-59 with two seconds left and Aggies ball out of bounds underneath their basket. Great execution gave them the two-point edge and win in the end.

Alexxus Gilbert had a game-high 21 points, her seventh game on the season with 20 or more points, while Vanessa Austin and JJ Johnson rounded out the Roadrunners' double-figure scores with 13 and 10, respectively. Austin picked up her second double-double on the year adding 10 rebounds in the contest.
