CSUB Faces Setback Against Valparaiso

USAFA, Colo. – Despite battling hard on Saturday, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team was unable to overcome Valparaiso, a team that has now won eight of its last nine matches. The Roadrunners put together a strong second set against the Crusaders, but Valpo eventually took the match in straight sets.

Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball, always looks for her team to get 2% better each match. After Saturday's matchup, Melo felt that her team struggled to get going against Valpo: "We are very inconsistent right now. When we play like that, it's hard to compete against good teams like [Valparaiso]." The Crusaders' only loss in the last nine matches was against No. 20 Michigan.

Valpo leaped to a 9-5 lead in the first set and extended its advantage to as many as nine points at 16-7. While the `Runners battled back, CSUB eventually fell by a score of 25-15.

The second set was much tighter as the two teams traded points back and forth until a roof by Emily Hansen and Brooke Boiseau put the `Runners ahead 10-9. CSUB continued to play well and earned a 19-16 lead, but a 4-0 run by the Crusaders forced Bakersfield to call a timeout. A huge swing by Rafa Bonifacio tied the score at 21-21, but Valpo was able to close out a 25-22 win in Set 2.

The Crusaders came out of the intermission strong and led from start to finish in the third set. CSUB never stopped battling, but was unable to overcome the solid Valpo offense. The `Runners fended off three-straight set points thanks in part to a pair of kills from setter Sidney Wicks, but CSUB fell by a score of 25-19 as Valpo took the match 3-0.

The CSUB offense was led by a pair of sophomores on Saturday as Hansen recorded a match-high 11 kills and Sukhov added seven. As a team, the `Runners hit .238 against the Crusaders with Wicks running the offense to the tune of 24 assists.

After nine matches over three-straight weekends, CSUB's road trip has finally come to an end. Next week, the `Runners (3-6) will host their own tournament in the Icardo Center. UC Santa Barbara, Montana, and South Dakota will come to Bakersfield for the Roadrunner Classic, Sept. 13-15. Season tickets and single-game tickets are available here or at the box office on game day.
