`Runners Race Past Gauchos For Sweep

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A well-balanced offense, ferocious blocking at the net, and a raucous home court atmosphere helped CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team earn a sweep over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night. In their first home match of the season, the Roadrunners bested the Gauchos to open the Roadrunner Classic with a dominant victory.

UCSB (6-4) came to Bakersfield on a four-match win streak and boasted the nation's third-leading hitter in Lindsey Ruddins. The `Runners (4-6) were able to slow Ruddins down, holding the outside hitter to a .119 hitting percentage, and out-blocked the Gauchos 11-3 in the sweep. As a team, CSUB hit .402 on the match, which ranks in CSUB's Top 10 performances for a three-set match, while only making four attack errors all night.

The `Runners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but the Gauchos were able to keep the game close. From a score of 9-8, CSUB went on a 6-2 run to open up some space, but UCSB fought back to tie the score at 17-17. After another tie at 20-20, Bakersfield won the final five points to take Set 1, 25-20. Middle blocker Brooke Boiseau tallied a pair of block assists along with Briannah Mariner and Desiree Sukhov down the stretch.

Set 2 was tight as well with CSUB leading UCSB 8-7 before the game opened up. The `Runners put together a 7-2 run to get to 15-9, then sailed to a 25-15 victory. CSUB converted on 15-of-20 attacks (.750) while Boiseau, Sukhov, and Mariner each had four kills in the set. Redshirt junior setter Sidney Wicks compiled 10 assists in Set 2 alone.

The third set had the same tipping point as the previous two, but this time, UCSB used a big run to gain breathing room. From 9-9, the Gauchos won seven of the next nine points to open up a lead. CSUB fought back and tied the match at 19-19. From 21-21, the `Runners rode a pair of block assists from Mariner and Boiseau to a 25-22 win and the sweep.

Sukhov, a sophomore outside hitter, led all `Runners with eight kills while adding two aces, four digs, and three blocks. Boiseau, a redshirt freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., tied her season-high with seven blocks to go with seven kills.

A senior outside hitter, Mariner also posted seven kills while adding five digs and five blocks on Thursday. Earning the first start of her career, freshman Milica Vukobrat tallied six kills against the Gauchos. Wicks posted 18 assists and seven digs in the Icardo Center while freshman setter Leisa Elisaia chipped in 11 assists of her own.

CSUB will return to the Icardo Center tomorrow to continue the Roadrunner Classic. The `Runners will face off against Montana at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
