`Runners Take Down Aggies For 5th-Straight Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A roller coaster of a match unfolded in front of a rowdy crowd of Roadrunner supporters on Saturday in the Icardo Center as the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team came from behind to defeat NM State. After falling a set behind, Bakersfield stormed back to win the next two sets and sealed the Western Athletic Conference match with a dominant fifth set (18-25, 25-21, 25-12, 15-25, 15-6).

The `Runners (8-6, 2-0 WAC) continued to enjoy a well-balanced offense that outhit the Aggies .215 to .168 on the match. CSUB also out-blocked NM State 15-9, tying the second-most blocks in a five-set match in Bakersfield's Division I history.

With three `Runners tallying double-digit kills, CSUB was led by redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau. The middle blocker from Scottsdale, Ariz. recorded season-highs with 17 kills and eight blocks in the Icardo Center. Her blocks total and .483 hitting percentage both tied for second-best by an individual in CSUB's five-set match history.
Sophomore Desiree Sukhov posted her second-straight double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs on Saturday. Redshirt junior Sidney Wicks added a double-double of her own on 33 assists and 11 digs. Freshman setter Leisa Elisaia came up one dig short of a double-double (17 assists, nine digs) for the second-straight match, while recording four crucial assists in the fifth and final set. NM State jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first set, forcing CSUB to call a timeout. The Aggies extended their lead to 17-10, but a 4-0 CSUB run kept the game from getting out of hand. Eventually, NMSU overpowered the `Runners and took the first set, 25-18.

Just as they did on Thursday night after dropping Set 1 to UTRGV, the `Runners answered back with renewed fervor. Bakersfield leaped to a 5-1 advantage, but the Aggies would not go down quietly. The second set featured 14 ties with the match knotted up as late as 21-21. After an NMSU attack error, Sukhov earned back-to-back aces to give CSUB set point. Boiseau and junior transfer Rafa Bonifacio rejected the next Aggie attack to seal the deal, 25-21, with a resounding block.

CSUB took the momentum of the crucial, Set 2 win right into the third set. Leading 8-4 early on, the `Runners used an 11-3 run to pull away and never looked back on the way to a dominant, 25-12 victory. NMSU did not have an answer for Boiseau, who added six more kills in the third set alone.

Credit is due to the Aggies, who came out in Set 4 and took a 6-1 lead out of the gate. The `Runners got as close as two points a few times, but NMSU made a big run to the end and tied the match at two sets apiece with a 25-15 win.

With the rollercoaster rocking and rolling, the `Runners were able to calm their nerves and play an outstanding fifth and final set. Bakersfield sprinted out to a 7-1 lead with freshman Milica Vukobrat recording a couple kills early on. From a score of 9-4, the `Runners won six of the last eight points to take the set 15-6 and the match 3-2. Another freshman, Hayley McCluskey, came off the bench and added two huge kills in the final set, including a rocket-like ball off the face of an Aggie defender to win match point.

Senior Briannah Mariner helped out the cause with 10 kills and six blocks in the Icardo Center. Vukobrat, a native of Serbia, wound up with six kills, two aces, five digs, and three blocks. Senior Mattison DeGarmo managed four kills against the Aggies while her six blocks and two aces helped push CSUB to victory.

CSUB will have a quick turnaround this week as the Runners are set to host Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in a non-conference clash. Next Saturday, The `Runners will host Utah Valley in CSUB's only WAC match of the week.
