CSUB Sweeps Fullerton For Sixth-Straight Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A slow start did not hinder CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team on Tuesday night in its quest to remain perfect at home. The Roadrunners rallied to take a tight first set against future Big West Conference foe Cal State Fullerton and then finished strong to sweep the Titans (25-23, 25-21, 25-14) in the Icardo Center.

Sophomore Desiree Sukhov has been a consistent force for the `Runners night in and night out. The outside hitter recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the season on Tuesday and her third in as many matches. Against the Titans, Sukhov tallied 11 kills and 10 digs. Redshirt freshman Brooke Boiseau chipped in nine kills while posting an outstanding hitting percentage of .529.

Redshirt junior Hannah Manzanares broke out for her best match of the season. Coming into Tuesday's contest, the defensive specialist had recorded a season-high four digs against UT Rio Grand Valley last week. Against Cal State Fullerton, Manzanares notched seven digs in the second set alone while anchoring the `Runner back line. The native of Phoenix finished the match with 10 digs, giving CSUB much-needed support on defense.

The first set of the match was tight all the way. Cal State Fullerton put the `Runners in a bad situation when it took a 23-21 lead, but CSUB answered by winning the final four points of the game to earn a 25-23 victory. Middle blocker Brooke Boiseau tallied four kills in Set 1 while redshirt junior Sidney Wicks had eight assists to lead all `Runners.

In another tight game, CSUB held an 11-8 lead in Set 2 when Fullerton called a timeout. The `Runners used a 7-3 run to gain some breathing room at 16-11, but the Titans swung momentum to draw within one point at 17-16. CSUB went on a 6-2 run to take a 23-18 lead and a block by Boiseau and senior Briannah Mariner set up game point. A Titan service error finally ended the set as CSUB took a 2-0 lead on a 25-21 win in Game 2.

By the time the third set started, the `Runners had fully found their rhythm. Set 3 was all Bakersfield from start to finish as CSUB put together an 11-4 run to go ahead 20-9. The `Runners finished off the set 25-14 to complete the sweep over the Titans. Sukhov, a native of Murrieta, Calif., recorded six kills and four digs in the final game.

CSUB's two setters, Wicks and Leisa Elisaia, continued to conduct the `Runner offense with efficiency. Wicks wrapped up Tuesday evening with 22 assists and five digs. For the third-straight match, Elisaia, a freshman, just missed a double-double after posting nine assists and nine digs against Cal State Fullerton.

With the victory, CSUB (9-6, 2-0 WAC) improved its 2018 record in the Icardo Center to 6-0 and is on a six-match win streak. The `Runners will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 29, when Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Valley comes to Bakersfield for an afternoon matinee.
