Barnes Adds Buckingham To 2018 Recruiting Class

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team is pleased to welcome the newest Roadrunner to the squad in De'Monte Buckingham. A 6-foot-4 guard from Virginia, Buckingham committed to transfer from Richmond to complete his final two collegiate season at CSUB.

"We are extremely excited about De'Monte's decision to become a `Runner," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach at CSUB. "We feel he will be an impact player. Our coaching staff did a great job recruiting him."

Coach Barnes went on to describe Buckingham's strengths and skills: "De'Monte is a very versatile player who can play any position on the perimeter. He plays really hard and can impact the game on both ends. His aggressiveness and versatility are the traits we were looking for in a player."

A native of Richmond, Va., Buckingham was a standout for the Richmond Spiders in each of his first two collegiate seasons. The guard averaged double-digit figures each year while pulling down 5.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 7.0 as a freshman. After a stellar rookie season, Buckingham was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.

During his high school career, Buckingham took home a slew of accolades while leading Henrico High School to a pair of 5A State Championships. He earned 5A State Player of the Year and All-Metro Player of the Year once each while gathering 5A South Region Player of the Year honors twice.

Per NCAA regulations, Buckingham must sit out the 2018-19 season due to transferring from one four-year institution to another. He will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season.

Buckingham's signing comes after the `Runners added junior colleges transfers Kevin McNeal and Darius Williams earlier this year. Coach Barnes said he believes this recruiting class will help the `Runners continue toward their goals of competing for championships and making postseason appearances.
