CSUB Loses Tough One to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth at Tony Gwynn Stadium, the CSU Bakersfield baseball defense couldn't hold a late lead as No. 25 San Diego State scored twice to win 5-4 on Tuesday night.

The Roadrunners (9-13) looked to be in trouble early as the Aztecs (14-6) held a 2-0 lead with CSUB recording just two hits in the first 18 outs.  CSUB got on the board in the seventh as Mark Pena knocked in Jassen Oliver who singled and stole second earlier in the inning.

After Kyle King tossed a scoreless bottom half, the visitors stormed back to take a 4-2 lead in the eighth.  Evan Berkey clubbed a one-out single to right and Andrew Penner reached on an error to put the `Runners in business. Both players moved into scoring position as the Aztec pitcher tossed the ball into center field while trying to pick off Berkey at second.  Ryan Koch grounded out to tie the score at two and consecutive singles by Alec Daily, Oliver and Sergio Robles put the `Runners out in front.

Closer Naithen Dewsnap (1-1) came on in the eighth to try and earn the six-out save.  Dewsnap yielded a solo homer in the eighth to make the score 4-3.  In the ninth, the senior hit the leadoff man and the CSUB defense committed errors on the next two sacrifice attempts, allowing the Aztecs to tie the score.  On the third sacrifice attempt, Dewsnap pounced off the mound and threw to third to get the lead runner.  The next Aztec singled to load the bases with one out, but the closer got the next batter to fly out to Robles in right.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the next batter singled and the home team walked off with the victory.

Starting against a ranked opponent for the second time this season, Isaiah Moten scattered nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, and allowed just two runs against an offense that was averaging nearly eight runs per game.

CSUB played great defense behind Moten to keep the `Runners within striking distance.  In the third inning, leftfielder Jassen Oliver threw a strike to Ryan Koch to nail an Aztec runner at the plate.  Koch was extremely effective in limiting the SDSU running game as he threw out two potential base stealers and picked off another baserunner at first.

The `Runners put together two-out rallies in the third and the sixth, but were unable to put any tallies on the scoreboard.  Daniel Carrizosa and Austyn Tengan had back-to-back singles in the third.  Andrew Penner was hit by a pitch after Evan Berkey walked in the sixth.

Davonte Butler tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Moten and King stranded two runners in the sixth to keep the score at 2-0.

The `Runners open conference play this weekend at UTRGV.  The series begins on Friday at 7:00 p.m. CST and continues on Saturday at the same time.  The three-game series concludes on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CST.
