Comeback Bid Falls Short for Baseball

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing by nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team scored five runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but couldn't complete the comeback and dropped Game 2 of a four-game series against Dartmouth College, 11-9.

Andrew Penner got the comeback started in the seventh with a single to right center field.  He stole second before Alec Daily walked and Jared Toothman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Evan Berkey got an easy RBI as he was walked in the next at-bat.  After an infield fly, Jassen Oliver clubbed a one-out, three-run triple to left center to cut the Big Green lead to 11-6.  Oliver came home on a wild pitch to complete the scoring for the inning.

After a shutout inning by Isaac Meza, Penner outdid himself with a deep double to center field to get another `Runner rally started.  Daily followed with a single to center field that skipped past the Dartmouth outfielder and allowed him to chug all the way to third base and score Penner.  Toothman followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 11-9, but that would be all CSUB could muster.

Penner powered the offensive attack with three hits and a double to raise his season average to .414.  Tonight was the senior's 11th multi-hit game of the season and he is now on a nine-game hitting streak.  Penner has also reached base safely in 18 consecutive games.

"Andrew's an excellent college baseball player," said `Runner manager Jeremy Beard.  "He knows how to hit and he knows how to work counts.  He takes advantage of mistakes as well as anyone we have.  He's a very quality hitter at this level and he adds a lot to our lineup."

Freshman third baseman Daniel Carrizosa also had two hits for the home team and Toothman provided two RBI.

`Runner starter Davonte Butler (1-3) walked five and gave up three hits in just three innings pitched.  Butler allowed just two earned runs, but did relinquish four to the Big Green offense.  Elijah Parks was the only pitcher to escape unscathed on the evening as he allowed one hit in the ninth.  The `Runner defense didn't do their pitching staff any favors as they committed four errors.

Jack Fossand (1-1) got the win for Dartmouth.  He tossed five innings and gave up just two earned runs, despite allowing five hits and four walks.
Game 3 of the four-game series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.  The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
