`Runners Defeat The Aggies To Take Current First Place Spot In The League

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team overcame No. 1 New Mexico State in a battle for a current first place position in the league. The Roadrunners defeated the Aggies 62-52 and now lead the conference by half a game with five games left.

"The focus on our team was huge," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB's women's basketball. "Overall great group effort, great team win. I am very proud of them! This is one those big wins that we have always talked about in our program's history because we have not beat New Mexico State in a long time. This puts us in that first place spot and we look forward to keep moving ahead."

The `Runners jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game but the Aggies would go on a 5-0 run themselves and tied the game at the first media timeout. The next five minutes of the game would tie three more times before NMSU finished the first period taking a five-point lead, 16-11. Into the second and both teams would start out scoreless in the first two in half minutes. New Mexico State and Bakersfield went back in fourth in scoring but the Aggies stayed on top into the half and claimed the lead at 29-25.

Bakersfield opened the third period with an early three pointer by sophomore Kate Tokuhara to give the `Runners enough momentum to go on a 10-6 run to tie the game back up at 35 points. CSUB defense stayed strong and matched its offense to take its first lead since the final minute of the first period at 37-35. However, NMSU tied the game back in the late in the third by going to the line for two points and end the period at 37 each.

Into the fourth and the `Runners were not going to let the Aggies take the lead again or have them come near a tie. Bakersfield started firing shots and went on a 14-5 run for six in a half minutes taking its largest lead with 12 points with three minutes left to in the game. New Mexico State would cut the `Runners lead by six in the final minute but that would be as close as the Aggies would get until the final buzzer.

Senior Alize Lofton led all players with 14 points, four rebounds, five assists, one block and steal.  Redshirt senior Jazmyne Bartee finished the contest with 12 points, six rebounds and one steal. As a team, Bakersfield outscored NMSU 24-22 in the paint and 18-10 off of turnovers. CSUB and the Aggies tied the game six times before CSUB gained the ultimate lead of the night.

The `Runners will close out the weekend with their Pink Game before returning home. Bakersfield will meet up with UTRGV on Feb. 10 for a Saturday afternoon game. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
