Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Make History Defeating The Vaqueros By 41 Points

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After going into overtime the last time CSU Bakersfield basketball team and UTRGV played in earlier in the season, today's game showed the Roadrunners are right on track for the second leg of conference play. CSUB defeated the Vaqueros 71-30, the fewest points the `Runners have allowed in a single game in school history.

"Another great game for us," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB's women's basketball. "Great week with two great home games. Locking in on defense was huge, knocking down open shots and just playing together as a team was fun to watch because these young ladies really want to go out there and execute. As a team, everyone did a good job and played good basketball."

Bakersfield jumped out of the gate taking a 9-0 lead and forcing the Vaqueros to an early timeout. UTRGV managed to add four points in the first period but CSUB led 21-4 at the end of the period. Into the second period and the `Runners wasted no time scoring and went on a 16-4 run while earning another four three-pointers in the in the period. At the end of the first half CSUB were 8 for 15 behind the arc while UTRGV were 0 for 11. Leading at the half was senior Aja Williams with 10 points while redshirt senior Jazmyne Bartee had quite the defensive half with 6 boards and 3 blocks.

The `Runners opened the third period allowing the Vaqueros to take a free throw and a layup but CSUB would hold UTRGV to only two points for the next four minutes and go 15-9 run to end the third quarter. Bakersfield continued to surge from there and took its largest lead at 69-25 (44 points) with 5:30 left in the game. CSUB was not worried about having the game go into overtime again as the `Runners ended with a 41-point victory over UTRGV.

Williams led all players with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Freshman Vanessa Austin finished the contest with 12 points, six rebounds, one and one block while Bartee continued to stay defensive ending the game with seven boards and four blocks. As a team, Bakersfield defense stayed strong being one block shy of the Div. I record for most blocks in a single game. (9, vs UTRGV, 1/8/13). CSUB outscored the Vaqueros 30-16 in the paint and 18-5 off of turnovers.

Coach McCall went on to talk about the the team, "This is the best `Runners basketball team since my last 10 years here. Three out of four years we have come in second and sat there for a long time trying to chase first place. So, it feels good to be in first place right now. We can't worry about the other teams, we have to take care of ourselves right now because we have a tough game on the road coming up at their place."

The `Runners will head out on the road for a single game next week. CSUB will travel to Arizona for a first season match up with Grand Canyon on Saturday Feb. 17. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. (M.T). Fans can watch the game live or follow stats live by finding the links on the women's basketball schedule page.
