Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Post Second-Straight 20+ Point Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball team opened Thursday night's contest with its best half of play all season and the Roadrunners cruised to an impressive victory in front of 3,204 Rowdy fans. Bakersfield enjoyed a 24-point lead at halftime and finished off an 81-58 victory over Kansas City in the Icardo Center.

"I thought that looked a little bit more like Roadrunner basketball," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners, after the game. "I thought our guys really competed. We played extremely hard. We played together. I thought we were really aggressive on both ends of the court."

UMKC stormed out to an 8-0 lead to open the game, but the `Runners responded to take a 12-11 lead and force the Roos to call a timeout. A 28-5 run helped CSUB take control of the game and the `Runners continued on to most one of their most dominant halves of the season. Bakersfield converted 57% of their field goals and were 5-of-10 from distance while UMKC managed just 30% from the field and 25% from three-point range.

With a 44-20 lead at the break, freshman Jarkel Joiner paced all players with 13 points while redshirt senior Brent Wrapp ran the floor, posting four points, four rebounds, and two assists. Redshirt freshman Justin Davis chipped in seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.

In the first eight minutes of the second half, Kansas City went on an 18-6 run, cutting the `Runner lead to just 14 points. After a timeout and a pep talk from Coach Barnes, the `Runners surged back out to a 22-point lead over the next three minutes and coasted the rest of the way. CSUB led by as many as 26 points en route to an 81-58 victory, the team's second win of the week by more than 20 points.

Joiner added another eight points in the second half to post a game-high 21. In his fifth 20+-point performance of the season, Bakersfield's freshman guard also added five rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Wrapp, a native of Boulder, Colo., finished with five points, five assists, and seven rebounds. The redshirt senior point guard is just 13 assists shy of becoming only the second `Runner in school history to record 500 career points and assists.

Redshirt junior Damiyne Durham converted on 6-of-10 shots for a total of 16 points while adding four steals against the Roos. Davis, who had seven rebounds, and senior Moataz Aly both ended up with 10 points on the night. Aly, a 6-foot-10 center, added two blocks and is now just three away from being second all-time in a CSUB career at 95 blocks.

As a team, the `Runners continued shooting the lights out, finishing the game with .554 field goal percentage. CSUB outrebounded UMKC 41-23 and the 15 `Runner assists trumped the Roos' eight. Bakersfield outscored its opponents 38-14 in the paint on Thursday and CSUB's bench contributed 25 points compared to Kansas City's nine points.

"The shots are starting to fall and we're playing with a whole lot more enthusiasm and excitement," Barnes said of his team's offensive revival this week. "Guys are making plays for each other. It was a great win for us."

CSUB (10-13, 3-5 WAC) will hit the road again for a pair of WAC games next week. The `Runners will take on league-leader New Mexico State on Thursday, Feb. 8, before heading to the southern border of Texas on Saturday for a clash with UTRGV.
