Baseball Drops Twin Bill in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Cal on Saturday.  The Roadrunners dropped a tight 5-3 ballgame in Game 1, before being defeated 23-2 in the nightcap.

Game 1 Recap
`The Runners (2-5) struck quickly on Saturday afternoon and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Golden Bears (4-2) in the second inning.  Alec Daily reached on error to start the inning and Mark Pena followed with a single to right center.  Both baserunners advanced a base on a groundout by Jared Toothman and were brought home on Noah Barba's one-out double.

CSUB starter Davonte Bulter made quick work of the home team in the bottom of the inning, tossing just eight pitches and sending the Golden Bears down in order.  Cal scratched across its first run in the bottom of third, but the bottom of the `Runner lineup answered in the following inning.

Pena got the inning started with a walk and Barba reached base again with a one-out free pass.  With Evan Berkey at the plate, Barba was thrown out trying to steal second with Pena advancing to third.  A double by Berkey brought home Pena and gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage through 3 ½ innings.

Cal knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth inning, but when Andrew Penner walked to start the fifth inning, the Golden Bears went to their bullpen.  That's when the trouble started for the `Runners as they would manage just one hit and two baserunners against a pair of Cal relievers.

Butler held off the Golden Bear attack in the fifth and CSUB threatened to take back the lead in the top of the sixth when Toothman stroked a one-out double, but he was stranded at third.  Cal chased Butler in the bottom of the inning with a home run and tacked on an insurance run off of `Runner reliever Elijah Parks.  Butler took the loss and tossed 5 1/3 innings.  He gave up just two earned runs, despite allowing seven hits.  Parks finished the game for CSUB and allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Berkey's fourth inning double extended his hitting streak to six games, but that streak was snapped in Game 2.  The freshman did continue his streak of reaching base safely in the nightcap when he was hit by a pitch in the third inning.  Pena scored two of the `Runners' three runs and Barba went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Game 2 Recap
The Golden Bears wasted little time getting to work in the second game of the day as they scored 18 runs in the first four innings of action. Max Flower and Jonah Davis led the way for Cal with a combined seven hits and 11 RBI.  The home team also took advantage of four CSUB miscues in the field.

CSUB scored its first run of the game in the sixth inning.  Barba earned a leadoff walk and Penner followed with a single through the left side.  Ryan Koch walked to load the bases with nobody out and Jake Ortega grounded into a double play that allowed Barba to trot home.  Pena grounded out to shortstop to end the `Runner threat.

In the ninth, Cole Valletta singled to start the inning and Hank Schieneller walked to give CSUB two on and nobody out.  Daniel Nist grounded into a fielder's choice that put runners at the corners with one away.  A pinch hit sacrifice fly by Christian Deaton brought Valletta home and Buck Anderson continued the rally with a single to left.  Berkey walked to load the bases, but Jassen Oliver struck out to end the threat and the game.

Jordan Ragan took the loss for CSUB in the first start of his career. The junior threw two innings and gave up five earned runs and seven hits. Daniel Carrizosa finished off the game well for the visitors.  The freshman tossed the final four frames and struck out four batters, while allowing three earned runs.

The `Runners look to salvage the fourth and final game of the four-game set with the Golden Bears tomorrow.  First pitch at Evans Diamond is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
