Roadrunners Inch Closer To Conference Title

OREM, Utah – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team holds on tight to keep its first-place position in a close game in Utah. The Roadrunners defeated the Wolverines in front of noisy crowd of 1500 plus students from all over the city of Orem, 64-60. UVU tried clawing back but in the end CSUB's defense would solidify the victory.

With an early start to today's game the early bird got the worm as both teams jumped right out of the gate to each score three pointers and the only tie in the entire game with five points. UVU then went scoreless for five and a half minutes while CSUB took a 7-0 run before the Wolverines tried to cut the `Runner lead at the end of the first period, 19-14.

Into the second period, CSUB takes back its double-digit lead by 13 points in less than four minutes to force the Wolverines to take a timeout. Just about one minute after that, the `Runners take their largest lead of the day with 16 points. However, UVU goes on a 11-1 run to end the half, 34-28. Sophomore Alexxus Gilbert led the `Runners with 11 points while Bakersfield had five blocks and scored 13 points off of turnovers just in the first half.

Junior Jazmine Johnson comes out quick with a layup to start the third quarter, but the game takes a turn and the Wolverines starts clawing back with a vengance. UVU cuts the `Runners lead by two points in the final five and a half minutes of the third period but CSUB goes on a 6-2 run to end the period ahead, 50-45.

CSUB only led by five at the start of the fourth period and then made it seven points with a quick layup but UVU answered right back with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to four. In the final minutes, the game would go back and forth in scoring while the Wolverines kept biting to take over the `Runners lead. UVU got as close as two points but a couple of fouls at the end would send Bakersfield to the line and run with the victory.

Gilbert led all `Runners with a career high of 18 points, 5 rebounds,6 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Johnson finished the contest with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists while senior Aja Williams played on the defensive side today and earned a career high with 13 rebounds, tying another career high with 3 blocks and coming just shy in assists with 5. The `Runners outrebounded the Wolverines 41-22 while outscoring the UVU 30-16 in the paint.

CSUB will finish its final road game of the season in Seattle.
