`Runners Drop A Heartbreaker At Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball played a tough rematch game against Seattle U who were looking for redemption the whole night after CSUB defeated them at home. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners dropped a heartbreaker in Seattle the second time around, 56-64 and will play Saturday for a chance to share for a first-place position for the WAC Regular Season Title.

`Runners jump out of the gate with four points before Seattle goes to the line three minutes into the game to get its first point. Bakersfield defense holds off the Redhawks to go on a 10-0 run to end the first 17-10. Into the second and SU start clawing back at the `Runners lead by going on a 6-0 run to come as close as three points, 19-16. However, CSUB jumped back on the wagon and took the largest lead of the night with 11 points (31-20). But once again the Redhawks would cut the `Runners lead to take the game 32-24 at the end of the half.

15 seconds into the third period junior Malayasia McHenry took the `Runners back to double digits with a three-pointer to an 11-point game but the match took a turn for the worst as Seattle U would go on a 19-0 run and take its first lead of the game and lead by eight points. Fortunately, CSUB was able to get the game down closer with three points with a couple of fouls called against the Redhawks. However, CSUB would return the call and send SU to the line that would give Seattle a five-point lead at end the third period, 40-45.

At the start of the fourth period the Redhawks got a quick three-pointer to took the game back to an eight-point lead but the `Runners started closing in on Seattle U by scoring two solid jumpers from senior Aja Williams to bring them game down to just a four-points. However, SU gets its largest lead of the night with 10 points with slightly under two minutes left to play. CSUB tried coming back fighting to get the game back down to four-points with 33 seconds left but a pair of fouls called on CSUB would allow SU to snap the `Runners eight-game winning streak.

Junior Alexxus Gilbert and Williams led all `Runners with 12 points and 4 steals each. Sophomore Kate Tokuhara finished the contest with 9 points, 3 assists and 1 steal. As a team, Bakersfield outscored Seattle U 20-11 from bench.
