`Runners Held On Tight To Stay In First Place After Defeating GCU

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball defense stayed on fire officially finishing up its first round of conference play in the season. The Roadrunners remain in a first-place position after defeating Grand Canyon University on Saturday by 29 points, 69-40.
  
CSUB started out fast scoring three points in the first two minutes while Jazmine Johnson jumped out with a steal for a fast break layup to put `Runners up 14-2 and force a Lopes timeout. CSUB would add two more points to end the first period, 16-2. Into the second period and the Lopes earn its only second layup after going scoreless for about seven minutes. The Lopes slowly started cutting the `Runners lead 25-14 but CSUB would end with 22 points ahead of GCU into halftime, 38-16.
 
Junior Alexxus Gilbert led all `Runners in the first half with a solid 12 points going 2-3 behind the arc. CSUB had an impressive 40% from the three-point line with nine fast breaks points leading the entire first 20 minutes.
 
Going into the third, both teams jumped out with four points each in the first two in half minutes. CSUB would allow GCU to add just 12 points in the period while the `Runners earned another 16 points to take the lead, 54-28 going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
CSUB went on an 8-3 run and added two fast breaks in under a minute to force GCU to take a timeout at 60-33 in the fourth period. The `Runners took its biggest lead of the game at 66-33 with just under five minutes and then nine more points to seal the victory at the final buzzer.
 
A trio of `Runners finished the contest with 12 points each (Gilbert, Johnson, and Jazmyne Bartee) while sophomore Dalis Jones tied her career high of 11 points. The `Runners outrebounded the Lopes 40-26 while proving their defensive effort could come out strong holding GCU, who led the conference in three-pointers, to only go 16.7% (2-of-12). CSUB outscored the Lopes 32-18 in the paint and 18-8 off of turnovers.
 
CSUB will finish its final two road games of the season next week. The `Runners will travel to Utah Valley for an early game on Thursday, Feb. 22 with a tip off scheduled for 11 a.m. (M.T).
