CSUB Offense Ignites To Down Chicago State, 91-61

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A lead from tipoff until the final buzzer, a defensive tenacity, and a pass-first offense helped the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team earn a 30-point victory against Chicago State on Thursday night. Behind double-digit scoring from five different Roadrunners, CSUB downed the Cougars 91-61 in the Icardo Center.

"I'm so thankful to God to see our team, not just getting the win, but seeing out team playing with a little more bounce in their step," said CSUB's Head Coach, Rod Barnes. "I thought we played extremely hard tonight. The way we have been practicing, I was excited to see our guys have a lot of fun out there on the court. I thought we defended really well, which gave us an opportunity to keep them from cutting the game too close."

Barnes continued on to describe how his team's defensive efforts had improved: "I thought Rickey and Jarkel guarded the ball really well. I thought we were more active. I told our guys, 'Wins and losses take care of themselves. If we're playing the way we're capable of playing and we're trying to get the best we can out of the team, things will start to come together.'"

In front of over 2300 fans, the `Runners opened the game with a quick, 7-0 lead and never looked back. Junior Rickey Holden and redshirt junior Damiyne Durham led the way on offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the first half. As a team, the `Runners shot 53.1% in the period and would go on to nearly match that performance in the second half. After leading by as many 20 points in the opening period, the `Runners ran into the locker room with a 45-30 advantage.

Chicago State started the second half with a 14-8 run, cutting the CSUB lead to just nine points, but never came closer as the `Runners surged to the end. The `Runners went on a huge run of their own over an eight-minute span and opened the lead up to 31 points at 83-52. Time ticked away quickly as CSUB finished strong for the 91-61 victory.

In the second half, redshirt freshman Justin Davis recorded seven points and eight rebounds and came up just one rebound shy of a double-double by the game's end. Durham went 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-10 from distance on the game to lead all players with 18 points. Holden was close behind with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting while adding four points, two assists, and three steals against the Cougars.

On Thursday night, the `Runners also enjoyed double-digit performances from freshman Jarkel Joiner (14), senior Shon Briggs (11), and Davis (11). Redshirt senior Brent Wrapp continued to be the team's floor general and contributed seven points and six assists on the night.

As a team, the `Runners shot 51.5% on the game while smothering the Cougar offense to the tune of a 37% clip. CSUB also had seven more steals than its opponent (9-2) and 11 more assists (17-6) in the victory. Big men Moataz Aly and Fallou Ndoye each had a pair of blocks for the `Runners while freshman Justin McCall rounded out CSUB's five total blocks.

With the win, Bakersfield improved to 9-13 (2-5 WAC) on the season and will look to win its third out of the last four contests when Kansas City (6-18, 1-6 WAC) comes to town on Saturday night. Tipoff against the Kangaroos is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center.
