Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Road Slump Continues At Omaha With 53-46 Loss

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team dropped its fifth-straight away game at University of Nebraska Omaha by seven points (53-46) on Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks would improve 5-4 while the Roadrunners fell below .500 (4-5) for the first time this season.

"We weren't knocking down open shots," said head coach Greg McCall. "This time you could really see it with us scoring just 46 points in the game on 52 shot attempts. You can't consistently shoot at a low percentage and expect to consistently win games - the two don't correlate with one another."

Omaha scored first 8:30 into the first quarter when Elena Pilakouta drove to the basket for two points in the paint. Bakersfield would miss its first five shots before Alexxus Gilbert put the Roadrunners on the scoreboard with 5:36 left in the period. Malayasia McHenry put the team on top in the next possession down, but a shooting foul play at the rim from Claire Killian put the Mavericks back up 8-6. Gilbert tied the score with under 1:10 in the period, then an Omaha turnover created another scoring opportunity that Gilbert capitalized on for the final 10-8 first quarter score.

The Mavs would open scoring in the second quarter to tie the game 10-10 before Jasmin Dixon knocked down a 3-pointer followed by a layup from Nina Carpenter in the next possession for a five-point 15-10 lead. Both teams would score eight points through the first six and a half minutes for a Roadrunner 18-16 lead with 3:27 left in the half. The `Runners closed the period with a 7-5 edge and held a 25-21 lead heading into the locker rooms.

CSUB split two free throws to start the third and extend their lead 26-21, but Omaha would outscore the visiting team 24-10 and enter the final period of the contest with a 10-point lead (45-35).

Bakersfield outscored the Mavericks in quarters one, two, and four, but were unable to overcome the Mavs' third quarter run. The score was as close as five points (49-44) with under five minutes left in the fourth, but late fouls to stop the clock sent the home team to the line and influenced the final 53-46 loss.

McHenry finished with a team-best 10 points and added seven rebounds and three steals in the contest while Jeri Fears also had seven rebounds and JJ Johnson had three steals.

"We have to learn how to win on the road," added McCall. "It just comes down to us making our shots. I think we're going to be okay once that switch clicks and we're able to consistently make shots early and down the stretch in games."

UP NEXT
The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team will have a nine-game stretch without competition before heading to Texas the following week for a pair of contests against SMU and North Texas on Nov. 19th and 21st, respectively.
