Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gilbert Leads `Runners in 49-43 Loss

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team lost its sixth-straight road game at Southern Methodist University by six points (49-43) on Wednesday night. The Mustangs would improve 6-5 while the Roadrunners fell 4-6 on the season.

"We had about 37 minutes of good execution, but we struggled to score points off steals or forced turnovers late in the fourth quarter," said head coach Greg McCall. "We put ourselves in a position to win heading into the final period, we just didn't convert down the stretch when the game was on the line."

"We also need to adjust to the way the game is being called," added McCall. "Teams are consistently getting to the free throw line at a higher rate than us but we're consistently putting up more shots, forcing more turnovers, and creating more steals – yet still coming up short. Cutting down on our fouls should help us down the stretch in tight games."

SMU opened the first quarter on a 6-0 run. Malayasia McHenry scored first for Bakersfield 7:36 into the period. A fast break layup from Alexxus Gilbert with 5:46 left in the first cut the deficit to two points. Gilbert would then go on her own 7-2 run to give the `Runners an 11-8 lead heading into the second period.

The score was within four or less points for majority of the second quarter. With 5:35 left in the period, a layup from Alicia Froling brought the score within one (16-15) but McHenry followed with her own layup in the following possession to give the `Runners a three-point edge. SMU tied the score 18-18 with under three and a half minutes to play before Bakersfield went on an 8-0 run to close the period with a 26-18 lead.

The Mustangs would outscore CSUB 31-17 in the second half for the final 49-43 score.

Gilbert finished with a game-high 19 points and tied her career-high in made field goals with eight on the night. McHenry added nine points before she fouled out of the contest. Dalis Jones had a game-high five steals while Nandi Jorden blocked a career-high six shots.

"Our girls' spirits are still high," said McCall. "They're eager and hungry still because they know we're right at the doorstep of the success we're working towards. We're not quitting or hanging our heads low because that's not our makeup. We're focused on ourselves and what we can do better."
