`Runners Take On Oregon State in First Pac-12 Dual

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team will hit the road on Sunday when they take on Oregon State for its first Pac-12 dual of the 2018-19 season.

"We're excited for our first Pac-12 dual of the year," said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera.  "We're looking to continue our momentum from Cliff Keen this weekend.  This is an important dual because of the seeding implications for the conference championships."

Series History
The Beavers lead the all-time series 26-12, with Oregon State winning 15 of the last 17 duals including nine of the last 10.  CSUB's last victory in Corvallis came in 2008 when the `Runners squeaked by 21-19.  The Roadrunners did earn a 21-20 victory in the Icardo Center in 2016.

Last season, returners Sean Nickell, Russell Rohlfing and Dominic Ducharme were all victorious by decision with Jacob Thalin earning a major decision at 165.  None of the 10 matches on Sunday will be rematches from last season's dual.  However, Ducharme defeated Oregon State's Myles Terry last Friday in Las Vegas with a comeback 13-10 decision.

Rohlfing Moving On Up
After qualifying for two consecutive NCAA Championships at 141 pounds, redshirt junior Russell Rohlfing will be competing at 149 pounds in 2018-19.  Rohlfing compiled a 55-25 record over the past two seasons, including a 7-2 mark in Pac-12 action.  Last season, he finished second at the Pac-12 Championships, defeating Isaiah Locsin of Stanford in the opener before falling to Colt Schilling of Cal Poly in the title match.  The La Habra Heights, Calif. native had no issues with the jump in his first match of the season, defeating San Francisco State's Isiah Alva 13-6 in his first match at the weight.

Currently, Rohlfing is ranked 16th in the nation by FloWrestling after starting the season 6-3.  Rohlfing is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.  Earlier this season, the redshirt junior upset No. 6-ranked Pat Lugo of Iowa 10-9 with a takedown with only five seconds remaining.

Nickell Ranked by FloWrestling, The Open Mat
Two-time NCAA qualifier Sean Nickell continues be ranked by several publications.  The Bakersfield native is ranked 20th by both The Open Mat and FloWrestling.  Nickell is 8-5 on the season and is coming off a solid performance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational where he went 3-2.  At the Roadrunner Open, Nickell finished second with his loss in the championship coming to North Dakota State's Cameron Sykora, who is ranked 17th.  All five of his losses have come to nationally-ranked competition.

Lineup Changes
The Roadrunners will be without two and possibly three starters as they make the trip to Oregon State for their first Pac-12 dual of the season.  Heavyweight Jacob Sieder and 125-pound Alex Hernandez-Figueroa have both been lost to the season due to injury.  Taking over for Sieder is Bakersfield native Jarrod Snyder. Snyder went 9-12 last year during his redshirt freshman season and is off to a 6-5 start this winter.  Freshman Eddie Flores will have a tall task in front of him as he is set to square off against the third-ranked wrestler in the country in his first career dual.  Flores won the Bill Music Open to start his career, but dropped both of his matches at the Roadrunner Open.

Mark Penyacsek is also working his way back from an injury that he suffered at the Roadrunner Open and is still questionable for Sunday's match.  Penyacsek is 5-5 on the year, but nearly defeated Kent State's Kyle Conel who was ranked No. 2 in the nation.  If he is unable to go, Josh Loomer will compete at 197 pounds.  Loomer is an even .500 on the season and finished sixth at the Roadrunner Open.

Noah Blakley-Beanes will also crack the starting lineup at 141 pounds, taking over for Carlos Herrera.  The redshirt junior is 6-2 this season and won the Menlo Open at the beginning of the year.

Action inside Gill Coliseum on Sunday will begin at 6:00 p.m.
