Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Offensive Surge Comes Up Short At North Texas

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team has dropped its last seven road games and fifth-straight contest with a 59-71 loss at University North Texas on Friday night. The Mean Green would improve 6-5 while the Roadrunners fell 4-7 on the year.

"We had some good moments where we had good things happen, but in small spurts," said head coach Greg McCall. "We had some individuals step up but as a whole we've got to do better with our communication and productivity."

"Some of our fouls that we're committing just aren't smart and we're putting other teams on the line more often then we need to," added McCall. "Other teams are capitalizing on their free throws and we're not. North Texas shot 78% from the line compared to our 33%. We're going to have to close that gap if we want to pull out these wins down the stretch."

It was a game of runs in the first two periods of the contest with Bakersfield getting the short end of the stick down 10 points at the half. North Texas opened the first quarter with a 7-0 run before the Roadrunners got on the board with a layup from Alexxus Gilbert. Down 11-2 with 5:58 left in the quarter, the `Runners would go on their own 11-2 run to tie the score heading into the second period.

UNT opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run in the first three minutes of the period. Dalis Jones knocked down a three ball with 6:43 left to cut the deficit to 10, but with just a 15-12 edge to close the period Bakersfield found themselves down double digits at the half for just the second time this season.

The Mean Green extended their lead to 19 in the third quarter of the game holding Bakersfield to seven points off 21.4% from the floor while adding 16 points of their own for the 58-39 score heading into the final period.

Bakersfield outscored UNT 20-13 in the fourth quarter, closing the period on a 13-2 run, but were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 71-59 in the end. Three Roadrunners finished in double figures, including Vanessa Austin (14), Jones (14), and Gilbert (13) while JJ Johnson had a game-high five steals on the night. Austin added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season of 70% shooting.

"We're definitely still moving in the right direction," explained McCall. "Our focus is where it needs to be we just need to make some adjustments but we're not rushing the process we're going to continue to trust the process. This was another good learning experience for us on the road as we prepare for conference play in January with two games on the road."
