Gilbert Resets Career-High In Loss At No. 11 Oregon State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior Alexxus Gilbert led the CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team and all scorers with a career-high but the Roadrunners would drop a 52-92 decision at No. 11 Oregon State University on Saturday afternoon. The group would pick up their eighth road loss and fall 4-8 while the Beavers improved 10-2 on the season.

"We did some good things out there today," said head coach Greg McCall. "I saw growth in some areas on both ends of the floor, but we still need to be a bit scrappier when it comes to those 50-50 balls."

"We've gotten better each game on the road this month," added McCall. "We just need to be hungrier when it comes to finding ways to win. Whether that be defensive stops when needed, a crucial rebound, or just finishing easy layups and put backs."

Oregon State opened scoring with a three-point play from Mikayla Pivec. Malayasia McHenry put Bakersfield on the scoreboard with two points in the key but OSU would go on a 5-0 run before Vanessa Austin made a layup in the paint with 7:18 left on the clock. The `Runners cut the deficit to three-points twice in the first period, however the Beavers closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to extend their lead 22-13 at the end of the period.

OSU started the second quarter with a 5-0 run to push their lead 27-13. Back-to-back triples from Gilbert brought the score within 10 points, 29-19, with 7:49 left in the first half but an offensive dry spell to close the period allowed Oregon State to push their lead to double-digits through the first two quarters.

The Beavers outscored the Roadrunners 27-12 in the third period and 20-11 in the fourth for the final score of 92-52.

Gilbert and McHenry finished in double-figures with 23 and 15, respectively. The squad forced more turnovers (17-5), created more steals (13-4), and took almost 20 more total shots than their opponent but Oregon State held the advantage in 3-pointers (16-6) and rebounds (55-24).

"We're doing a good job at following the game plan and executing plays drawn up, we just have to do the right things more often," said McCall. "I thought our patience on offense was really good, we did a good job of running our sets all the way through and taking quality shots late in the shot clock. We're hoping that'll translate over into conference play."
