Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUB Swarms Cal Poly For 4th-Straight Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Behind swarming defense and stat sheet-filling effort from redshirt sophomore Taze Moore, the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team deflected a late surge to defeat Cal Poly in the Icardo Center. Tuesday night's contest saw the Mustangs cut Bakersfield's lead to single digits late in the second half, but the Roadrunners were able to push to the end for their fourth-straight victory, 74-61.

"I'm really proud of our guys," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We've played a couple of games during finals and they've been able to stay focused. Tonight was a really exhausting kind of game, but the guys bounced back. The first half, I thought we were really good defensively."

CSUB held Cal Poly to just 38% shooting from the field during the game while forcing 18 Mustang turnovers. On the night, CSUB recorded 12 steals and four blocks while out-rebounding Cal Poly 41-28 on the Kern Schools Court. The `Runners shot 45.5% from the field while looking to Moore for a spark from every category. The guard came off the bench to play 33 minutes while contributing nine points, a career-high seven assists, five rebounds, five steals, and three blocks for Bakersfield.

Cal Poly jumped out to a quick, 5-0 lead on CSUB, but lost the lead to the `Runners around four minutes into the game. The Mustangs were never able to regain the lead while Bakersfield pushed its advantage to as many as 17 points early in the second half.

The opening period was one of CSUB's best of the season on both ends of the court. The `Runners converted on 47% of their field goal attempts while outscoring Cal Poly 39-23. The Mustangs were only able to knock down 24% of their shots and coughed up 13 turnovers on eight Bakersfield steals. CSUB's redshirt senior James Suber led the way with 11 points and seven rebounds in the opening period.

The Mustangs made offensive adjustments in the second half and started clicking, especially from three-point range. Six treys in the second period helped Cal Poly draw as close as six points with 12 minutes left the half, but the `Runners never let their opponents get any closer. Down the stretch, sophomores Justin Edler-Davis (4-for-4) and Justin McCall (2-for-2) and senior Rickey Holden (3-for-4) combined for nine made free throws to help the `Runners ice the game.

At the end of the night, Edler-Davis wound up with a team-high 15 points for CSUB while chipping in a career-best four assists. McCall wrapped up the evening with another 10-point performance including a high-flying windmill dunk late in the second half.

Suber, a native of Philadelphia, came up one rebound short of a double-double after posting 11 points against Cal Poly. Sophomore Jarkel Joiner tallied nine points with 11 rebounds, a new career-high for the guard.

With the victory, the `Runners (7-4) will end 2018 with a perfect, 4-0 record at home. CSUB is scheduled to put its four-game win streak on the line in two days when Portland State hosts the `Runners on Thursday night. To close out the calendar year, Bakersfield will head to Spokane, Wash. to face one of the Top 10 teams in the country in Gonzaga on New Year's Eve.
