Roadrunners Drop Eight-Point Decision at Fullerton

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the third-straight contest senior Alexxus Gilbert led the CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team in scoring but the group dropped another closely contested game at Cal State Fullerton by eight (64-56) on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners would pick up their fourth-straight loss on the road and fall 4-4 while the Titans improved 4-4 on the year.

"We finished the game with an advantage in nearly every stat line, said head coach Greg McCall. "We were getting the shots that we wanted from anywhere on the floor we just weren't knocking them consistently enough. Defensively we were sound, we turned them over 24 times to our 11 - it just came down to our inability to knock down open shots."

Fullerton got the first bucket of the contest from the free throw line at 9:22 in the first quarter then followed with a quick jump shot from Jade Vega to lift the home team 4-0 early in the period. Freshman Jasmin Dixon would respond with four points of her own to tie the contest with 5:11 left but the Roadrunners found themselves down 14-6 at the end of the first after a 10-2 run from the Titans to close the period.

Malayasia McHenry would open scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer but Amiee Book followed with a three of her own to bring the deficit back to eight. The Titans were forced to call a time out with 6:51 left in the period after the Roadrunners went on a 9-2 run to bring the score within two. A driving layup turned into a three-point play by freshman Nia Johnson put the `Runners up for the first time in the contest. Nandi Jorden hit a jumper from the elbow to extend the lead to three. Bakersfield would go on an 11-0 run before Clarissa Rodarte cashed in two points for the Titans to start their own 8-1 run to close the period. CSUB held on to a 29-25 lead heading into the locker rooms at half time.

A 3-pointer from Raina Perez just under nine minutes in the third period cut the lead 29-28. Nina Carpenter responded with two points, but a CSUF and-one in the paint brought the score back within one and ignited a 5-0 run that put the Titans on top 35-31 with 5:13 left in the quarter. CSUB used its own 6-0 run to retake the lead 37-35 but the Titans put up five more points to close the period and enter the fourth with a 43-38 advantage.

The Titans opened scoring for the second-straight period with a 3-pointer and layup to extend their lead 48-38. Jeri Fears started an 11-3 run that saw Gilbert sink three -3-pointers in a row and bring the score within three (52-49), but the `Runners were unable to put together the late run needed to retake the lead and win the game and CSUF closed the period on a 12-7 run for the final, 64-56, score.

Gilbert finished with a game-high five assists and tied the game-high in points with 17. Although Bakersfield had the advantage in total shots, 3-pointers made and taken, assists, turnovers, and steals 28.6% from the field and a 43-32 advantage in rebounds gave Fullerton the edge it needed to pull away with the win.

"I'm looking forward to this upcoming week of practice," added McCall. "We really want to focus on our mental preparation. Teams are going to zone us because it's difficult to matchup with us one-on-one. We'll get a chance to look back at the film, work on our zone offense, and even add in a few more play options for better looks."
