`Runners Score 111 For Sell Out Crowd On Education Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In front of a sell-out "Education Day" crowd, CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball team earned a 36-point victory in its home opener on the Kern Schools Court in the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners sprinted away from Antelope Valley to take a 111-75 win, making history in a pair of categories along the way.

While the `Runners came up just short of the school's Division I record for most points scored in a game (114, vs. Pacifica, 2/23/13), CSUB played with a blistering pace in the first half. CSUB scored a total of 68 first-half points, the most in any half in the school's Division I era. Bakersfield rode 17 first-half points from senior Rickey Holden and 16 points from redshirt sophomore Justin Edler-Davis.

After a slow start, the `Runner defense buckled down and held the Pioneers to just 28 points in the second half while CSUB's offense continued to shine. The `Runners held UAV to just 32% shooting in the second period while increasing their lead all the way to the finish.

Holden, a guard from Laurel, Miss., continued to convert shots at will for Bakersfield. He finished as CSUB's leading scorer with 25 points while not missing a single shot all day (8-8 FG, 5-5 3FG, 4-4 FT). Holden tied the school record for single-game field goal percentage, equaling the 8-8 performance former `Runner Kevin Mays had against San Diego Christian three years ago.

CSUB also got solid performances out of Edler-Davis, who posted 19 points and eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Sophomore Jarkel Joiner rounded out the game with 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds while a total of five `Runners scored in double-digits (Greg Lee, 13; James Suber, 10).

Three `Runners made their CSUB debuts on Friday morning. Head Coach Rod Barnes enjoyed seeing Bakersfield native Jeremiah Dickerson play 12 quality minutes with four points, an assist, and three steals. Junior college transfer Kevin McNeal recorded seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals in his `Runner debut. Another redshirt freshman, Cartrell Thompson, tallied five points and two rebounds in his first action at Bakersfield.

CSUB (1-1) will have nearly a week off before beginning a busy week of basketball action. The `Runners will leave for the Junkanoo Jam next week to play three games over four days in Bimini, The Bahamas.
